“I’m not dying. Not even sick. But people kick it all the time in many ways,” Duke replies and runs a hand through his thick hair. “I want my club to be safe when I’m gone.”

“And your daughters,” Court says, winning a frown from McGraw. “Your mother, too, I assume. So, what do you want from us?”

“Charleston isn’t an option,” Duke explains. “I can’t have those monsters around my daughters. That leaves your club.”

“You’re looking for an alliance.”

“Temporarily, yes. Eventually, I want Rawkfist to patch over my club.”

Court doesn’t respond immediately despite this scenario being the exact thing King Peepaw assumed might happen. Meaning the scenario must have run through my uncle’s head, too.

My president finally says, “You want one of our guys to be your future president, right? This isn’t about numbers. You have that.”

“Sure. We have so many guys that I sent a bunch to work with my brother in Florida. But numbers can’t run a club.”

“I’ll do it,” Val announces.

“Do what?” West asks.

“I’ll run this club one day.”

Duke McGraw frowns at Val, looking him over. “I want a husband for my daughter. You don’t seem mature enough for that.”

“Hey, I’m plenty fricking mature,” Val spits out before pausing and asking, “Wait, which daughter?”

“Hold up now,” West blurts out. “Is this shit really happening?”

“I haven’t decided,” Court answers before Val can.

My cousin steps up and asks again, “Which daughter?”

“Lola.”

“Thank God.”

“Why?” Duke growls, giving Val a dark look.

I can tell immediately how my cousin is about to lie. “Your other daughter is super virginal, and I’m not looking to break in a woman.”

McGraw is off his stool immediately and in Val’s face. “You need to watch your mouth. I put up with your rude sister because she’s harmless. But you’ve been sniffing around my town too much, and I won’t have you talking shit about my girls.”

“Sniffing around how?” Court asks Val.

Shrugging, my cousin replies, “I ran out of women to bang in our part of the county. Basin Rock has a fresh supply.”

Duke exhales hard. His usual casual demeanor is gone. For the first time, I see the man capable of running a biker club full of meatheads.

“Not you,” Duke says and backs up.

“I’m your only choice. West plans to run Rawkfist. Ike doesn’t want to run anything. Otto isn’t around. Felix is a West Virginia part-timer. Oh, and every single one of them already has a woman.”

“You’ve got other members,” Duke says to Court.

“Not anyone I’d put in charge of my club.”

“Would you give it to this jackass?” Duke asks, sizing up Val.

Court studies Val who takes the opportunity to pose and flash his muscles. My uncle understands what McGraw can’t. Val and West put on these goofy displays in the same way Poppy and Tuesday break into gasp-filled drama spectacles.Emotional chaos is in their blood.
