Ace stares at me, and I see the torture in his eyes. “Wait,” he shouts, and she freezes, turning to face him with a satisfied smile on her lips.

“No,” I croak. “No, I don’t need anything that bad.”

“Mae, you’ll die.”

The woman laughs aloud, throwing her head back. “Seriously, you think I need to force men to have sex with me? Look at me. I can’t give her water, they’ll make my life hell. They want you to suffer, and watching her is killing you.”

“What kind of sick fucks are they?”

“The kind that want The Rebellion to suffer.”

The woman leaves, happy that her mindfuck mission is now complete. I stare longingly at the water as it soaks into the stone. I’d tried the basin when I first came. The knobs turn, but nothing comes out. Just like the toilet—it doesn’t flush, so there’s no fresh water.

“She could be our way out of here,” says Ace. “Maybe I can use my charm to win her over. If I can just get her to unlock these cuffs, I can overpower her.”

“With no water or food inside of you, you’re weak. Even if you get past her, we don’t know who’s outside waiting. They’ll kill us both.”

“What do you suggest we do then, Mae?” he growls, frustrated at the lack of enthusiasm for his plan. My hope is running out fast. We have no clue where we are or why the hell we’re here.

“I don’t know, Ace. All I know is we’re stuck here, and the chances are they’re gonna kill us once they’re bored of us.”

It’s the middle of the night when I’m dragged from my bed and pulled up the steps. I stumble several times, cutting my legs and hands. Ace yells and curses, but they take no notice as I’m pulled out into the fresh, cold night. The stars are bright, and I guess we must be in the countryside somewhere. The stars only shine like this when there are no city lights to dull them.

There’s a large home nearby. It’s where they first took me when we arrived here. It’s the sort of home girls like me dream about, with red bricks and white pillars standing proudly out front. Inside, it’s clean. The floors shine, polished and buffed until the twinkling lights from the chandelier can be seen reflecting.

My feet are bare, as I somehow lost my trainers in the struggle when we were first bundled into the van. A well-built man in a suit steps out of a side room and grins at me. “You know, you weren’t the girl we wanted, but I’m so glad we found you. I think you’ll be so much fun. Go and bathe, and I’ll join you shortly.” I watch as he disappears into another room. The man who brought me in here pulls me up the winding staircase, and the cream fluffy carpet on each step feels amazing between my toes.

I’m taken into a room with a large bed, big enough to get at least four of Ace in. “Bathroom’s through there,” grunts the man, pointing to another door. I wait for him to go and then rush to the bathroom. I turn the cold tap on full and splash the water into my parched mouth, savouring the cool feeling as it slides down my throat.

There’s a bath filled with warm water and bubbles waiting for me. I glance back at the door, finding there’s no lock, but the water looks so inviting that I’m desperate to feel it cleanse my skin. I strip off quickly and step into the bath, closing my eyes in pleasure as the warmth envelopes me. There’s a line-up of small bottles, each containing a different potion to get me clean, and I don’t hesitate to use each one.

Once I feel clean, I settle back and close my eyes. It’s hard to relax when I know the man is coming to join me soon. It happened the first night I was brought here, exactly like this, only I was in a different room. I didn’t tell Ace. It would have hurt him, and he needs a clear head so he can get us out of here.

I dry and pull on the shirt that’s laid out on the bed for me. It’s a man’s shirt, white with buttons up the front. I fasten each one and then climb into the clean bed. I feel my eyes drifting, and the man isn’t here yet, so sleeping for a short while can’t hurt.

I don’t know how long I sleep, but I’m awoken without warning. My ankles are tugged hard, and I’m pulled down the bed until I’m hanging over the edge. Then I’m turned over onto my stomach and a hand pushes into the middle of my back, crushing me against the mattress. I grip the sheet in my fists and squeeze my eyes shut while the man in the suit takes what he needs. This time, I don’t waste any tears. Instead, I think happy thoughts. I think of my mum and our holidays to the sea when I was little. I think of my friends and how amazing each one of them is. And I think of Ace, the only man I have ever really loved.

Chapter Fourteen

ACE

Mae is gone for a few hours at least. When she returns, she’s clean and fresh, her hair is damp, and she’s wearing a shirt, a mens white shirt, and nothing on her legs. I watch her as she takes a seat on the bed. “Where have you been?”

“We’re in the countryside. I noticed the stars were shining brightly. That only happens when the city lights are far away. We drove for almost an hour from London, so where could we be?”

“How the fuck do I know, Mae? We could be anywhere around London. It means nothing, and even if we knew, who the fuck would we tell?” I’m pissed. Why is she clean? Why is her hair damp? I can smell expensive shampoo, and who gave her the shirt?

“The house is big. It’s like a country estate. Do you know anyone who owns a big house in the country?”

“Yeah, Mae, I always hang out with the big wigs and play golf at their country manor in my spare time. Where the fuck have you been, and who’s shirt is that?”

“Well, think, Ace! Get us out of here. Come up with something, anything to get us the fuck out of here!” She’s getting hysterical, her voice high-pitched and shaky. “I just want to get out of here.” She begins to sob and then lays down on the dirty mattress, pulling her knees up to her chest.

“Where did they take you, Mae? Did you talk to anyone?”

She shakes her head. “I didn’t see any men hanging about. Outside, there wasn’t anyone, but the gates are high. Inside, there was just one man in a suit. He looks important and he was the one who killed the guy that took me. I think he might be the boss.”

“A suit?” I repeat. “So, that rules out a biker gang. Did he have tatts?”
