She laughs too. “Meli was hard, but Mav was a testosterone-filled boy with anger problems. He looked up to his father so much, and when he began to see him for what he was, he didn’t know how to deal with that.”

“I remember his outbursts,” I say.

“He wouldn’t listen to me because he thought I was weak. Eagle pushed me around, and I guess I looked weak, but it took strength to survive him for my kids. And survive him, I did.” She takes my hand, something she’s never done, and emotions swirl around inside. “It’s hard work when you have to be strong all the time. Even harder work when you’re acting.”

“How did you get through to Mav in the end?” I ask.

She grins. “A few slaps, a lot of threats, and taking a step back.”

“Really?”

“Sometimes, they need to make their own mistakes to see the truth. Ollie’s a boy in a man’s world, and he’s trying to find his place. But you need to remind him he’s here because you raised him. There was a time in his life when all he had was you. Take control and show him he can’t treat you like shit.”

“Did it help?” I ask. “Having Eagle around?”

She scoffs. “That man almost ruined my life and my kids. If I could turn back time, I’d have left long ago and taken my babies with me. Mav saw way too much for his young age, and the girls . . . well, the emotional damage is one thing, but he sat back and allowed Meli to be hurt physically. If I could go back, I’d have killed the motherfucker a long time ago.”

“I guess Ollie’s lucky he never got to know him.”

“Very lucky. Now, chin up, cos we miss that sassy mouth of yours.”

Chapter Seven

ALBERT

Mav looks over the map and nods in agreement. “All of this area is open for us to take,” I say. “If we move now, we’ll get control easily.”

“And you don’t think it’s too much when we’re fighting for the Abbey Road estate?”

“No. We’re already out there making noise, we may as well take it all.”

“Okay. I’ll take it to church and vote on it, but I think we’ll be good to go. I can have men out there tonight cleaning up the gangs if you get the word out.”

I nod, folding the map. “I’ll let Art know you’re in. We can move right away. I have men visiting bar owners as we speak. We’re offering the usual rate for protection with a discount for anyone who gives up info.”

We shake on it, and I head out, but instead of leaving, I go up to Rosey’s room. If she’s going to get the message that she’s mine, I need to be present. I find her laying on her bed, staring at her iPad. She glances up. “I’m busy.”

“I’m not in the mood for your mouth today,” I tell her, fisting her hair and turning her away from me. I use my free hand to grab her leggings and tug them down far enough to expose her. “Talking about that messy son of a bitch with Meli like a fan girl,” I add, releasing myself. “He’s a fucking boy, Red. Is that what you want?” She tries to nod, and I slap her thigh. “Bullshit. He couldn’t handle you.” I ease into her, and she groans. “You need a man to take the amount of shit you throw.” I fuck her hard until she comes and then pull out, spilling myself onto her backside. “You need to be on the pill,” I mutter, rubbing my sticky mess into her skin.

“Who says I’m not?” she asks, arching a brow as I tuck myself away. I pull her leggings back into place. “I checked your medical record,” I admit, and she narrows her eyes. “You’re an employee, I get to see that shit.”

“I didn’t give you permission.”

I lean down, kissing her on the forehead, and she scowls. “I’ll pick you up later.”

“What for?”

I shrug. “I haven’t decided yet.”

ROSEY

He leaves, and I smile to myself. He keeps on coming back, even when I tell him not to. I like it.

I meet Archer after lunch so we can go over our plan. I’ve been hired to take out a Paedophile. It’s not uncommon, especially in this case, where the customer went through the proper channels, but the court system failed her. She’s been biding her time for three years for this moment.

“Wait in the bathroom until I get him up to the room. Don’t come out until I say the keyword.” I don’t usually share my work like this, but he needs to practise a clean kill away from Albert’s eyes.

“And what’s the word again?” he asks.
