She takes the file and sighs. “Got it. And you’re happy with her, Bert?” She bites on her lower lip suggestively, and I grin, nodding.

“Very happy.”

She heads for the door. “I remember you used to say the same about me.”

I’m back at the office when Dave calls. “Boss,” he says when I answer, “I don’t know if this is relevant, but I keep hearing the name Dougie Harrison. Ollie mentioned it earlier to Ste. Said he’s gonna take on the estate.”

“What does that mean?”

“He’s moving gear, boss.”

“And how does Ollie know that?”

“Not sure. I didn’t push in case he got spooked. He seems to know him pretty well, though.”

“Thanks.” I disconnect and scrub my hands over my tired face. What the fuck is Ollie mixed up in?

When I finally walk through my door at nine that evening, I’m surprised to find Rosey waiting for me in the hall wearing nothing but her knickers. I smirk. “Thank god I didn’t bring a client back.”

“I figured you’d had a hard day and I didn’t help with my hysteria.”

I laugh. “And what happened to Ollie?”

She shrugs. “He had plans and I didn’t want to stick around the clubhouse cos Meli would have forced me to help her babysit.”

I shrug out of my jacket and sweep her against me. Backing her into the living room, I bend her over the couch. “It’s gonna be fast and hard,” I warn her, pulling her knickers to one side.

Rosey returns from the shower and takes a seat at the kitchen island. She watches as I prepare dinner. “You cook?” she muses.

“I learnt young,” I tell her, stirring the bolognaise. “Mum was working all the hours she could, and Art was out making us a name. Someone had to watch the brats.”

She smiles. “You were a good brother.”

“Not sure Tommy and Charlie would agree,” I joke, “but I tried my best.”

“It’s all we can do,” she says, and I feel like she’s referring to her situation with Ollie.

“What plans did Ollie have?”

She shrugs. “He was seeing his friends.”

I nod. “Do you know them?”

“Some.”

“I remember having to check on Charlie. He always attracted the wrong sort of friends.”

“Really?” she asks.

“I got him out of some scrapes,” I say, smirking. “Ma still doesn’t know half the shit he got up to.”

“He was lucky to have you to rescue him.”

“Do you think you’d want more kids? Someone for Ollie to guide through life?”

She laughs. “No. That ship sailed long ago. I never wanted kids.”

“Yet you had Ollie?”
