“Lauren, I—”

She cuts me off by pressing her mouth to mine. I don’t react, even though I saw it coming. She rocks herself against me, thrusting her tongue in my mouth desperately, and I should be feeling something. Lord knows she’s hot as sin, but all I can think about is Rosey. Lauren pulls back, eyeing me with annoyance. “Seriously, Albert, give me something here.”

I take her by the waist and lift her from me. “I’m sorry, but I’m in love with someone else and leading you on would be a shit thing to do. So, I’m gonna go, and we’ll pretend this didn’t happen.”

I step outside and open my phone. Maverick’s called me three times, so I return his call first. “About time,” he snaps. “You send me to check on Rosey and then don’t pick up my calls?”

“Apologies, I was . . . never mind. Is she okay?”

“Not really. First of all, her mum was there acting cagey. She really didn’t want to let us in. Anyway, eventually, she did, and Rosey was asleep. So deep in a sleep, I couldn’t wake her at all.”

“What does that mean, Mav?” I snap impatiently.

“When she did eventually stir, she was groggy and disorientated. I’m back at the clubhouse swapping my bike for a car so I can get her out of there.”

“You think she’s in danger?”

“I think she’s off her face on drugs, Albert. And there’s no way she took that shit voluntarily.”

“Come get me on the way. I’ll send you my location.”

As we approach Rosey’s door, it opens and a man steps out, fastening his jeans. I exchange a wary look with Mav, and as we come to a stop, we block his exit. “Can I help you?” he asks, irritated by our presence.

“We’re looking for Rosey,” says Mav.

He smirks. “She’s asleep.”

I focus on where his stubby fingers are fastening his belt and anger pulsates wildly in my veins. “Explain why the hell you’re leaving her place at this hour, fastening your jeans.”

He almost laughs. “She’s my fucking stepdaughter, ain’t no funny business going on. Maybe you should tell me why the hell you’re turning up here at this hour.”

“She never mentioned a stepdad to us,” says Mav.

“Yeah, well, she didn’t mention no boyfriend to me,” he replies.

There’s a stumbling from inside and we all turn as Rosey hobbles into the hall. “What the hell’s going on?” she hisses, looking like she’s just woken. Her eyes fall to me. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to check on you,” I tell her, concern replacing the anger. She looks exhausted and confused. I step closer, cupping her cheek with my hand to get a close look at her pupils, but she steps back, lowering her eyes to the ground.

“I’m fine. I don’t need you checking up on me.”

“What have you taken?” I ask.

“You heard her, she doesn’t want you here,” the guy snaps.

“I don’t even know who the fuck you are,” I say, “and I’m assuming you have no idea who the hell I am, but it would be a mistake to assume I’m not important, so run along and go about your business.”

“No, Dougie, stay,” says Rosey, reaching for him and tugging him inside. “You need to leave, Albert. And don’t come back here.” She closes the door in our faces.

“Dougie,” Mav repeats. “You think that’s Dougie Harrison?”

I nod. “How many idiots called Dougie could there be around here?”

“Shit, we gotta get Rosey and Ollie out of here,” he mutters.

“Looking at the state of her, she’s not going to come willingly.”
