Rosey smiles reassuringly at me, but until the tests come back, I’m not convinced. “How will we know for sure?” I ask.

“In sexual assault cases, we’d usually find bruising in and around the vagina, maybe some bleeding even. There’s nothing that concerns me. The swabs will show any STDs, and if you could provide a pee sample, we can check for bleeding.” He hands Rosey a pot, and she gets up to go the bathroom.

“You sure she’s not been touched?”

“As sure as I can be.”

I head downstairs and relay the news to Mav, who’s still holding church. The guys look relieved. “So, what was the point?” I throw out there. “If they didn’t rape her, why were they keeping her drugged? Why was she naked?”

“Maybe they wanted to use her to get at you,” suggests Ghost.

I shake my head. “They didn’t know our connection. Rosey isn’t one to tell everyone. Besides, when she went to them, we were over.”

“It’s not me they wanted.” Rosey appears behind me. “They drugged me to keep me quiet. It’s Ollie they want.”

“Why?” asks Mav. “He’s just a kid.”

“And you’re his family,” says Rosey. “I think you’re both the target.”

ROSEY

I take a seat in the room and none of the bikers dare to question it. Mav smirks. “Come in, take a seat,” he says with a hint of sarcasm.

“It’s the easiest way to get to you,” I continue. “You and the Taylors run this area, and they want it. He’s already pushing drugs out under your nose by using kids.”

“How do you know all this?” asks Grim.

“There are kids around their place all the time. It’s obvious. He claims to be some kind of youth worker. I was sussing it all out when Mum gave me those pills. I think he realised I was on to him.”

“And if the social worker confirms he got the ball rolling on the emergency care order, Rosey could be right,” says Albert.

“We need a plan to get Ollie away from them,” Grim says.

“I want in on the plans,” I say firmly. “And I want to kill Dougie Harrison.”

The following day, I wait anxiously by the window for the social worker. The second I see the car stop outside, I straighten my hair and head out to meet her. “Good morning,” I say brightly, taking her by surprise. I hold out my hand, and she shakes it. “I’m Rosey. It’s great to meet you.”

Albert’s car pulls in right behind hers and he gets out. “Sorry, I got held up at work,” he apologises, rushing to stand at my side. “I’m Albert Taylor,” he adds, also shaking her hand.

“You’re looking much better from the last time I saw you,” she tells me. “I’m Lucy Wells, the family support worker.”

“You’re not the social worker?” Albert asks.

“She called and asked me to come. She thought it would be better seeing as I’m acting in the whole family’s interest. Jill was appointed as Ollie’s social worker.”

We head inside, and I point to the table where Mama B has laid out coffee and cake. We sit down, and I watch her take out a file. “You said you saw me before?” I ask.

Lucy smiles awkwardly. “I came along to visit with Jill. You were sleeping.”

“I wasn’t well . . .”

“It was five in the afternoon. Your mother told us you’d been in and out of that state for over a week.”

“I had a virus,” I continue. “It really knocked me off me feet.”

“Your mother seemed to think it was more drug and alcohol related. She told us you have a history with addiction.”

“Bullshit,” snaps Albert. “That’s not true. Connie’s only been on the scene a short time. She doesn’t even know Rosey.”
