He scoffs. “I’ve been doing this for a year.”

“And I’ve been doing it since I was eighteen. Mr. Taylor isn’t going to send you any work if he sees this sort of shit. He thinks I’m reckless, he’s seen nothing yet.”

“I get the job done. I don’t see the problem.”

“The problem, Archer, is the more mess there is, the more expense there is for the clean-up. That’ll eventually come out of your part of the money because the Taylors are understanding, they know sometimes things get messy, but with you, it’s every job.” I look down at the dead body. “You cut into his artery.”

“It’s a quick death,” he argues.

“It’s a messy death. You’ll get blood splatter on yourself, which ties you to this murder scene. You should do some research on the human body. Avoid all messy areas, especially arteries.”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” comes Albert’s voice, and I sigh. “This is like an episode ofCSI. What the hell happened?”

“My fault,” I say before Archer can answer. “Sorry, I hit the artery by mistake.”

He places his hands on his hips and stares back and forth between me and Archer. “Yet he’s the one covered in blood. And you’re reckless, Red, but not stupid. Get this cleaned up now and then burn the place to the ground.”

“If we’re burning it, why do we need to clean up?” asks Archer. I elbow him in the ribs, and he hisses, glaring at me.

“Because it’s a fucking shitshow of DNA, you stupid prick. Rosey, outside, now,” he snaps, disappearing back through the door. I follow, giving Archer one last glare. Albert’s pacing. There’s something hot about a powerful man looking stressed.

“He’s still learning,” I offer with a shrug.

“Learning?” he growls. “Ollie could do better than him. What the fuck do I do with a rookie who spills blood like it’s a river? He’s gotta go.”

“Come on, he lost out on the cash from Jolene,” I remind him. That’s how I met Archer—one of Arthur Taylor’s enemies had hired him to kill Albert and Meli.

Albert laughs. “If I’d have known that was what was coming for me, I wouldn’t have worried.”

“He might be messy, but he’s good. He would have gotten you.”

“Yeah, and spread me over half of London. I’d rather pay himnotto work for us.”

I smile. “Give him another chance. I promise I’ll keep a closer eye on him, and I’ll show him the way.”

He stops in front of me. “That date—”

“It’s a stupid idea,” I begin. I don’t even know why I said it. I was in the moment. “Forget about it.”

“Tomorrow night.”

“Albert, honestly, just forget I said anything.”

“Do you want your sidekick to keep his job or not?”

“That’s blackmail.”

He grins. “I’m not a nice guy, what can I say?”

“Which is the exact reason a date isn’t a good idea. Anyway, have you ever taken a woman on a date in your life?”

He shakes his head. “Nope. And you’ve never been on one, so let’s learn together.”

Archer comes out, and Albert gives him an irritated look. “Anyone got a match?” he asks.

My mobile rings and I see Ollie’s name. He never calls me, so I answer right away. “Ollie?”

“Mum, can you come and get me? I need you.” His words chill me.
