“Put the blade down, Little Shadow,” I tell her.

She drops it instantly, stepping back to give Alexi’s still-stunned face a moment to realize what just happened.

“We need to talk,” Lev says, getting Alexi’s attention. He gestures for us to sit while he starts working on coffee.

I quickly rehash the conversation I had with the demon that donated his sperm for my creation. Alexi is rattled, and Lev keeps looking at Evie like he’s afraid someone is going to jump through the window and attack her any minute. Making my way slowly to the glass doors behind the table, I check to make sure that’s not a possibility. Our large balcony is empty, but the door is unlocked. We’ll have to be better about that since someone could easily climb to the second floor.

I lock it tight, pulling on the door just to make sure it’s engaged. Lev looks at me with a nod of approval while Alexi attempts to pull the hairs from his head in frustration.

“Who have we messed with lately that could want to hurt us like this?” he asks, getting up to pace the floor. Evie is silent. She hasn’t said a word since we all gathered out here. She’s probably scared out of her mind that The Shades are after us.

“Maybe we should let Evie move back to her old room,” Lev suggests. “So she’s not a target along with us. If they really are here, they know she doesn’t leave our sides.”

Evie’s head shoots up at that. “I’m not afraid of these fuckers,” she says, clearly pissed at the idea.

I think our Little Shadow likes her new home.

“They will not tell me what to do with my life. Now, I’m going to see Laney, but I’ll be back Sunday,” she says, standing and heading to her room. “Damien,” she calls, and I follow without question.

Maybe I will get lucky this morning.

I walk into her room behind her and she shuts the door.

“Can you tell Doc he doesn’t have to come by?” she asks, grabbing a pair of black leggings and sliding them on under her oversized t-shirt. I watch as she pulls them over her juicy ass, forgetting the question altogether.

“Damien?” she asks again.

I come to my senses once she has them fully on. “Why don’t you want to see him?”

“Because I feel fine today.” It’s a simple reply, but I’m not convinced it’s the truth.

“Little Shadow,” I say, but she takes off her sleep shirt to replace it with a new one. Again I fall prey to her body. I swear she knows exactly what she’s doing. Once she has a new shirt on, she throws some clothes in a bag to take with her, and I finally wipe the drool from my chin.

“I’ll think about calling him if you tell me the truth and stop trying to distract me,” I say, winding my hands around her waist.

She looks annoyed with me that her plan of distraction didn’t work. After a minute, her forehead falls into my chest. “I don’t want him to touch me,” she whispers. “I don’t want another man's hands on me that I didn’t choose to be there.”

Now that I can understand. I take her chin in my hand, making her look at me. “Good girl,” I praise as I kiss her softly. I pull back but keep my mouth close to hers as I say, “You can tell me when you’re afraid. You have every right to be.”

She leans her forehead into mine. “I don’t like feeling afraid, much less admitting it. It makes me feel weak. Small even.”

“The weak are the ones who don’t know when to be afraid. Your fear doesn’t make you weak, Little Shadow, it makes you smart. I’ll take care of Doc if you can swear to me you’re truly feeling alright. If you’re not, then maybe we can find a way for Lev or myself to look over you so you feel like you have more control.”

She lets out a heavy breath. “I don’t know a time when I truly felt alright, but I know that I feel no different today than I did before I was drugged.”

That statement feels very carefully worded, but I’m trusting her. Plus, I plan to text Laney and make sure she keeps a close eye on her.

“Alright, I’ll message him.” Her body immediately relaxes. “Tell me if anything changes, okay? We can figure it out together, but you have to be honest with me.”

Her arms wrap tight around me. “Okay.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay with Laney a little longer until we can figure this out?”

Evie pulls back from me. “I’m sure, Damien. I’m not going anywhere.”

“This is one of those moments where it wouldn’t be so bad if you were afraid.”

“But I’mnot,” she says, throwing a little attitude my way.
