“In the heat of the moment. But I’m certain once he’s had time to think about it, he’ll come around.”

I shook my head even before he finished speaking. “I don’t think so. I’ve never seen him that angry. Have you?”

“Ava…”

“No, really.” I shifted in my seat so I faced him. “Have you?”

Tight lines traced the corners of his eyes and his lips pressed into a flat line.

Seconds passed and he had no response for me.

“I thought as much.” I dropped back in the seat and stared out at the brake lights moving in front of us. “He’ll never speak to us again.”

“It’ll be alright, Ava.”

“Just because you say it over and over doesn’t mean it’ll happen!” I pressed my hands to my face, instant regret rushing through me.

Liam wasn’t at fault. I shouldn’t have raised my voice. I was just so frustrated that I—

“Come back home with me.”

I raised my gaze to meet his. “What?”

“I don’t want you to be alone tonight.”

That was sweet. Especially after I just shouted at him. But…

I shook my head. “I’d like to go to Linea’s, please.”

The car’s engine was the only sound for a few moments.

“Alright,” Liam said evenly.

Guilt twisted in my gut. We’d just endured a difficult evening. It made sense to process it together.

But being with him after all that happened seemed wrong. Like my Dad’s anger was justified.

He never wanted to see us together again.

Not that he had followed us and would know where I spent the night. I just needed some time apart.

“Are you mad?” I murmured.

“No, I’m not. Ava, I can’t be mad at you.”

His words spread a balm over the guilt tearing through me. At least one person I cared about didn’t see me as a villain.

“It’s just what I need right now, some time apart. I just need a bit of space.”

Liam side-eyed me. “I understand, Ava. It’s alright.”

He didn’t sound like it was alright. I felt the need to further explain myself, but I resisted. There was nothing more to say.

I gave him Linea’s address. Every mile that brought us closer to her place seemed to push us farther apart.

The truck came to a stop in front of her building. It felt wrong to leave him like this, especially because there seemed to be many unsaid words hanging between us.

“Liam, are you okay?”
