“Come on, let’s sit.” I pried her left hand from the right and brought her to the couch.
We sat, knees touching, but Ava had retrieved her hand. She folded it in her lap now, playing with her fingers.
“So, can you tell me what’s wrong?”
A heavy exhale left her body.
I waited. Whatever this was, it had to be significant. Or I wasn't the person she needed to speak to.
Why did the latter thought displease me so much? We weren’t friends. We only slept together once.
Get it together, Cooper.
“Ava?”
“I-I’m trying.” She sighed.
“I’m here for however long it takes.”
Her eyes coasted back up to mine. The freckles across her face stood in sharp relief. Her nose quirked in a question.
“I’m not leaving you.” I took her hand. “Whenever you can, let it out.”
She curved her small hand into mine, drifting closer. “Thank you, Liam.”
I squeezed her hand.
"You're not so bad when we're not at my dad's, and you're not trying to make me mad."
I chuckled. “You should have seen your face.”
“I panicked!” She sat up. “Didn’t you?”
I shrugged. “I know you won’t tell him. Neither will I. So it’s all good.”
Her shoulders fell again, and she sighed. "I wish I were as confident as you."
“Are you still worried about your dad finding out?”
“No, not exactly.”
“Then what?”
She didn’t respond and wouldn’t look up.
I reached across the space and brushed away the hair from her cheek. Just to see her face. Figure out what was going on in her head.
My fingers grazed her soft skin, and awareness rushed through me. Then my thumb moved, stroking gently.
I couldn’t stop if I tried. Didn’t want to.
Her eyes met mine now, like she felt the same. She shut her eyes for one long minute and pushed her face into my palm.
I swallowed thickly and moved forward. Our legs intertwined. I palmed her face and continued rubbing her cheek with my thumb.
Her head fell to the side, exposing a long, slender neck. My fingers followed, tracing a path down, making her skin blush a pretty pink.
