I couldn’t have wine. It was alcohol and that was bad for the baby.

Dr. Morris said I could have a drink here and there, but how much was that? I didn’t want to take a chance with my baby’s health.

But my glass was already filled with red wine.

I just wouldn’t drink it.

Liam picked up his glass by the stem. “To a lovely dinner with a beautiful woman.”

My heart melted.

“Let’s have a toast, Ava.”

Oh, yeah.

I grabbed my wine and raised the glass. “To a lovely dinner with a beautiful man.”

“How did I know you’d say that?” His eyes crinkled with laughter.

We clinked glasses and I placed the cool rim on my lips. He was looking at me, so I tipped it.

I tried not to cringe and placed the glass on the table. That was a tiny sip. No more now.

Liam’s gray eyes followed every single thing I did, including my wine aversion. “You don’t like it?”

He’d almost finished his first glass, and I’d barely drunk from mine.

“No, it’s great. I’m just not much of a wine drinker.”

“Oh.” Liam’s brows lifted.

I inwardly winced. I loved wine, just not right now. “Yeah.”

“But you like beer, right? I’ll get you a beer.”

“No!” I protested a little too loud.

I held onto his arm to keep him from standing.

“No?”

“No. I don’t want you to leave.” True enough.

His eyes looked doubtful.

Think, Ava.

“I want to hear the pinky promise story.”

The wary look in his eyes turned to a smile and his body relaxed. Only then did I pull my hand back.

“My first patient after I finished medical school was a little girl. She had a broken pinky finger. It got smashed in a window.”

“Sounds horrible.”

“It was.” His brows knotted, like he could still picture it. “She kept saying she won’t be able to make promises and keep them anymore since she couldn’t use her pinky.”

“Aww…” A sad laugh left my lips. “What about her other pinky?”
