I smiled and settled back in my seat.
It was so dark out I hardly saw beyond the scope of the headlights. I craned my neck. Twinkling stars spread across the sky, but no moon.
“I could have driven myself, you know.”
“It’s too dark and too late. I don’t want you on the road by yourself,” Liam clipped out.
I blew out a breath. “So what am I to do tomorrow? Walk around Hannibal?”
“I'll take you wherever you need to go.” He paused. “And I'll get someone to drive your car back to Hannibal. You’ll have it back by evening.”
I rolled my eyes but kept my thoughts to myself.
“We shouldn't have stayed out so late,” Liam muttered.
Eating all my dinner plus Liam’s remaining dinner didn't sit in my stomach so well. It was fun to win, though. So after our late lunch, we took a walk around town.
It was a beautiful, peaceful place. Not so unlike Hannibal. Only there, we didn't know anyone.
Liam laced his fingers with mine and dropped occasional kisses on my temple. He seemed to do so without thinking. But each sign of affection sent my pulse racing.
Too bad we had to leave. Now, he was getting back to his usual stoic self.
“I miss it already.”
Liam turned to me, his jaw softening. He placed a hand on my thigh and rubbed gently. “Maybe next time we'll stay longer.”
“Okay.”
While his left hand navigated the wheel, his right hand remained on my lap. The small taps were for comfort, but my body yearned for a different kind of petting.
Biting my lip, I worked my dress up. Just a little. So I could feel the brush of his palm against my skin.
Liam started to turn.
“It’s quiet on the road tonight.”
“Yeah, it's different from the afternoon. I've never driven this route before.”
He was distracted.
Yes! Just keep him talking.
“Me too.” I adjusted in my seat and my dress rode up. His hand grazed my bare skin and I bit back a moan. “Well, the first day I saw Dr. Morris was my first time driving it, too.”
“How many appointments did you have with her?”
“Just a few.”
He absentmindedly rubbed my thigh.
Oh, fuck.
I dropped lower in the seat and his hand inched up. My eyes rolled back in my head.
If I had driven myself, I’d have missed this.
“Ava.”
