“Hey, Silas. Yes, everything looks like it’s here so far, but that’s not the reason for my call,” I say. “Have you seen Isabella recently?”

“Yeah,” he answers, confusion clear in his tone. “She just left a few minutes ago to follow you-know-who. Is something wrong?”

“No,” I breathe, some of the tension seeping away with his reassurance. “I got a text from Monte wanting to talk about her progress, is all.”

“I see,” Silas answers. “I’ll set up a meeting with her tomorrow so we can get a detailed report of what she’s found.”

“Thank you,” I sigh, grateful for his guidance. “I’ll let you get back to work then.”

“You’re very welcome, Alph—Skylar,” he corrects himself. “Call me back if you need me to explain any of the documents.”

We say our goodbyes, and I leave my phone face up on the desk in case I get another call. Silas’ reassurance helped, but I can’t help the spark of intuition at the back of my mind, warning me something is off. My gaze flicks between the phone and my laptop, indecision warring within me. Reluctantly I focus on the computer, realizing there isn’t anything I can do right now. I don’t know where she is, let alone if she’s even in danger. I’d need to search the entire town, which would be nearly impossible to do without a starting point.

Chewing on the corner of my lip, I’m deep in concentration as I open the spreadsheets, ready to dive into the pack finances when the door bursts open. My hand flies to the dagger sheathed at my leg, and I draw it in a swift movement, ready for an attack when Everett stomps in uninvited, his lips curled into his seemingly ever-present scowl.

“You know, for someone who complains about people barging into their office, you sure don’t have a problem storming into mine,” I drawl, leaning back into my chair and casually placing the dagger on the desk.

His icy blue gaze flicks to the movement before they meet mine, barely caged fury burning within them.

“When were you going to tell me you met with Glenda Hart?” he exclaims. The door closes behind him as he steps inside, the smack against the frame echoing through the office, punctuating his question.

“Let me guess—Arsenio told you,” I huff out in irritation, switching my attention back to my laptop as though his presence is a mere annoyance, like a bug pestering me. I’m going to have to have a talk with Arsenio about this. He’s definitely on probation now.

Who am I kidding—that won’t last long.

“I should’ve been—”

“No,” I say, cutting him off. “My family is the one with ties to them, not yours. If she called me trash, she probably would’ve spat in your face and slammed the door on us if you were with me.”

“Well—” he grumbles, but I cut him off again.

“Well nothing.” I idly scroll through the spreadsheet, not really looking at anything in particular, just to piss him off. “I took care of it.”

“By promising help to a witch, whose family hates our—”

“No, by promising help to my pack member who just so happens to be mated to that witch,” I reply primly, cutting him off yet again.

“Stop doing that,” he growls, stalking over to my desk.

“I will once you stop being so predictable in your arguments.”

“This is serious,” he says, his massive palm looming over the computer for a split second before he shuts it. I barely yank my hands out of the way in time, a muttered curse spilling from my lips as I glare up at him.

“Bastard.” I cross my arms over my chest. “Fine, you have my attention. What do you want?”

“This is what I really wanted to show you,” he grumbles. Plucking an envelope from his back pocket, he throws it on the desk, the thin bundle of papers skittering to a stop right in front of me.

Skylar Draven.

My name is written across the front, the writing somehow familiar.

“It was found just outside the gate by the guards this morning,” he explains, his icy gaze betraying the slightest hint of fear in their depths. “We checked the cameras though, and there’s nothing. Somehow, they managed to get to the front of the compound and back without being detected.”

“Elise?”

“It has to be,” he growls, his lip curling in a snarl. “I already have the surveillance team revamping the system and searching for a possible backdoor.”

“You’re seriously insufferable, Everett.” My heart pounds as I look between him and the envelope. “Instead of coming in here to tell me why you were really upset, you went off on a tangent about me going to the Hart Coven.”
