And a chance was the best we could hope for in the long run.

I blew out a breath, surprised when Auren walked up the path toward the kids. He greeted the kids, and they nearly dogpiled him with how excited they were; the trainer was shaking his head, but most of the others helping him were grinning at the interruption.

You should help,Aria said innocently. When I gave her a look, she batted her long lashes, clearly battling back a grin.

There’s a spark of heat down our bond, and I couldn’t help but smirk back, pulling her into me and squeezing her hips. You just want to see me all hot and sweaty.

Sure enough, her cheeks darkened, and her gaze flitted from mine, looking cute and snooty as she hummed.I just think teaching kids how to defend themselves would suit you.

Oh, so it’s some of your maternal instincts. Got it.

When she shoved me, I laughed, letting her stomp a little ways away before catching up and lacing her fingers with mine again.

NOT ONE, BUT TWO!

ARIA

Iliked flirty Sariel. I decided as he caught up to me. It dragged a giggle out of me as I led him across the grass towards his brother and the class of kids currently bickering for his attention. My mate let me without complaint, content as long as our arms swung between us.

The youngest Ambrose looked up, and the children were rounded up by their teacher, seeing as they’d lost his attention. I could feel Sariel pushing against the bond despite his best efforts, desperate to escape the incoming interaction yet unwilling to leave me on my own right now.

“That was an interesting meeting,” I commented as we made it to him, then grinned when Auren predictably rubbed at his neck before stuffing his hands into the leather jacket.

“We didn’t get through everything, but if we’d kept going, I think the twins would have started a brawl. They can’t stand being glamoured; they say it feels like being covered in mud.”

That explained why it wavered so much when I now knew for a fact we’d run into several people who maintained the illusion full-time.

“I’d hate to see them without it,” Sariel said dryly, and Auren grinned.

“It’s not for the faint of heart. I’m convinced they’re related to hellhounds, but saying as much will get you chewed out.”

Auren was so still he didn’t even look real—it was like moving would send his brother scurrying off like a startled bird. It would be funny, if watching them interact wasn’t so sad.

Sariel had spoken nothing, but praise about his little brother, and knowing that the pedestal he’d placed Auren on had toppled over was disheartening.

“Aria, do you think Lucifer would side with us?” Auren asked.

I shook my head before he even finished the question, feeling apologetic despite it having nothing to do with me. The fallen angel was eccentric at best, antagonistic at worst, and asking him for help would get us tangled up in deals we couldn’t afford to make.

“I figured,” he huffed. “I tried to get an audience with him at one point, but the demon laughed in my face at the thought.”

His attention shifted to the children who had returned to their training a little ways away, frowning.

“I think I’m related to one of them,” I admitted. “Michael or Lucifer, that is.”

Sariel squeezed my hand as Auren’s eyebrows climbed over the top of his aviators. “What gave you that idea?”

It’s easy enough to explain what happened while we were in Hell and how… odd it all was.

“You think Michael would help, instead?” Auren asked afterward, and Sariel actually laughed aloud, swiftly stopping when his brother tensed.

Don’t tell him that he already has,my mate advised.Saving my life was probably all he was willing to give us, anyway.

Never mind the implication that saving Sariel’s life should have been enough, in the angels’ opinion. Of course, it brought forth more questions about how strong they’re actually expecting us to be, but that subject always made me uneasy.

“No, I don’t think he would help,” I answered. “They both seemed pretty disconnected from Earth as a whole, to be honest.”
