The pain came back instantly like it was never gone in the first place. I couldn't hold back the scream that tears out of me.

That became my everyday. Sometimes it's burning, sometimes it's electrocution, and sometimes—sometimes he just fuckingtalked. Those days were arguably the worst because I got to hear about how my mate thought we were blissfully happy and thriving when I was really stuck here.

In a cage.

Again.

"I thought for sure she would have worked it out by now. He's not even trying to act like you—or maybe you two are very similar?"

We were watching them together, and I couldn't even muster anger. The narrow-eyed, suspicious look he gave me was ridiculous, but it faded just as swiftly as it arrived.

"If it is any consolation, Sariel, I do feel terrible about this. The plan was she would realize what we had done, and it would set off her angel, locking the bond in place."

"I thought we had to have sex for it to solidify."

Lucifer snorted. "No, that is just theeasiestmethod. Emotional connection is arguably the better way to go about it. In my research, I found those are the strongest."

I wondered what constituted as strong to him, but he continued on before I could think of a way to ask.

"She was supposed to put it together after a day or so and then come to get you, but since she didn't, I figure we should try pushing for your wolf to emerge."

Long fingers brushed through my hair absently, and I slapped it away on instinct. Immediately, a jolt rushed through me, and his hand returned to patting me on the head as if my spasming beneath his touch was of no consequence.

"Now, now, be polite. You'd thinkyouwere the one raised by wolves with the way you act." He giggled at his own joke. "Azazel was once one of my favorites, you know. Many, many years ago. Anyway, I consider some of his children my own. Maybe I'll adopt you, too."

The man was as insane as my father, I decided.

"Would you like to meet some of your other siblings? You don't have any sisters, so perhaps one of his daughters. I believe Amarantha is possessing a human Queen right now, but maybe Yvette? They were both dead before you were even a twinkle in Azazel’s eye, but they're better suited to being Archdemons, anyway."

Because all fallen angels were Hell-bound when they died, I recalled.

My heart ached at the thought of being away from my mate for eternity. On the screen, she paused, rubbing her sternum with a frown. It brought me a modicum of peace that she wasn’t entirely cut off from me, even if she hadn't worked out the truth.

"Well, look at that," Lucifer mused. "Maybe she'll figure it out after all. I wonder which of you will find your other half first."

"Let me go back, and we'll solidify the bond," I tried, and he gave me a faux sympathetic look.

"I tried that already if you recall. You were gone for quite a while, and yet you are still ‘unofficial’—Is that the right term? Regardless, the time for bargaining is over. Rest assured, I won't let her grow old and die before you get back to her. You're fortunate Barimuz reminded me I needed to make sure we slowed time on this plane for a while. Otherwise—well, you've been here for a while, haven't you?"

Lucifer waved his hand like he wasn't dropping a disorienting amount of information on me, sipping whatever was in that godforsaken mug of his.

Swallowing my pride, I tried again. "Please—"

When I woke up from the shock he gave me, I was alone in my cage, watching my mate again.

WHO IS HE?

ARIA

Sariel twirled me around the bedroom, laughing when I squealed at him hauling me up abruptly.

He’d been this way ever since the other evening when he’d finally come back from his walk. Whatever he’d done to cool his head had worked, and he’d been… well, not normal, but better. Sometimes, there was still a weird sort of tension when he thought I wasn’t looking, but I’d let him process it on his own time.

“And how has your day been?” I giggled when he set me on my feet and got a shrug.

“It’s been a day. Training with the twins has been interesting.”
