Fair enough.

He was satisfied with that.

I took a steadying breath, looking around to make sure I didn’t have a huge audience for my show. Thankfully, I’d been cutting across a small alley between the buildings, and not many people would pause to watch me have a meltdown, even if they did spot me.

Not too much shit, though,I teased, and Sariel gave me the mental equivalent of a dismissive grunt before fading some.

It was odd how the bond’s telepathic ability had evolved when we’d finally sealed it. The subtle gestures we’d use if we were together had started translating over alongside everything else. Eye rolling, huffing, hand waving—it all had afeel, even if we weren’t able to do the actual movement. I liked it.

Meet me in the kitchen?he suggested.I’m almost done here.

I agreed, then started heading in that direction, already feeling lighter than when I’d made my half-assed escape from the clinic. Auren was right; everything would be okay, even if it felt terrible right now.

Of course, I had to jinx it.

I didn’t hear the explosion—Ifeltit in the rattle of my bones and the sudden ringing in my ears, and then realized it when I discovered that I was suddenly flat on my back.

The sky spun above me, making me sick as I blinked away dust and grime. It took a moment for me to notice that the reason I was struggling to breathe was the block of cement across my abdomen, and it took even longer to get it off of me.; Sitting up was almost impossible from the way everything kept tipping and twirling; the constant hum in my ears kept me from making out what was happening around me.

I stopped trying once I realized there was no way I was going to force myself up, opting to lay on my side and try to see if anyone else was hurt.

Instead, I saw wolves.

Red eyes were nearly glowing as they barrelled through the debris and the dust, but it wasn’t until I saw one slam into another woman trying to get up from the rubble that I realized we were being attacked.

The wolf killed her, jaws clamped around her neck and head thrashing until blood sprayed across the cement, and I shuddered.

They missed me, somehow, scampering by as I lay out flat, watching the chaos unfold with blurry eyes. I could hear snarling and howling all around me as the fallen-blood wolves we’d taken in began shifting in their anger, taking up the fight against the intruders.

Tiana's voice cut above the noise for a moment, screaming for Maisie and Anthony. It broke my heart. Those kids didn't deserve this.

I could feel hot rage down the bond, followed by fear and an array of emotions that twisted up my insides.

Sariel.

I needed to find my mate and make sure he was okay.

That thought had my angel surging forward, ready to cut through everyone between the two of us as he yanked on the bond, equally panicked by this development.

My angel took over in a flurry of light and gray feathers—and I saw no more.

QUIETUS

SARIEL

Azazel was here.

I saw him, standing at the back of the incoming fallen-bloods and all the Paras roaming around the compound.

My wolf was frothing at the opportunity to sink my teeth into him. I was barely keeping it together when Azazel’s eyes finally landed onme.

Neither of us had been prepared for the way my angel suddenly overtook me and launched at him, but my father barely flinched. His fist caught me in the chin and knocked me away in a flurry of wings; my claws came out in retaliation, swiping for him and only narrowly missing.

No words were said. No words were needed, really, but it’s unusual for my father not to run his mouth at the first opportunity.

A boot hit my chest. It wasn’t until I slammed into the ground that I realized we’d been above it.
