“How about we get together on Sunday?” he asks. “I’ll plan something fun for us to do.”

“Kaiden, you have a gorgeous pool in your backyard. Let’s hang out here.”

“You’d be okay with that?” he asks, looking relieved.

“Of course. I’ll most likely be beat after working four late nights in a row anyway.”

“Come over whenever you want. I’m not going anywhere. What do you want for dinner?”

“Food.” I smile. “I don’t know. Surprise me.”

“Any allergies I need to be informed of?”

“Nope. And I eat pretty much anything.”

“Mealworms?”

“I mean normal food.”

“Hey, that’s normal to some people.”

“I can confidently say, I’m never eating bugs, at least not on purpose. If I swallow one when I’m running or sleeping, I can’t help that.”

He smiles. “I’m not eating bugs either. I’ll come up with a more edible meal for you.”

“Burgers and dogs are fine. I’m easy to please.”

“Okay, but I’ll talk to you before then,” he says.

We exchanged numbers last night while we were sitting in the bed of his truck, and he texted me his address this morning.

“Sounds good.” I grab my bottle of water, my phone, and the bag of wet clothes. “I’ll bring your shirt back on Sunday.”

“You can keep it. I have ten years’ worth of them.”

I’ll take any he wants to give me, especially if they smell like him.

“Okay, I will. Thanks.”

“I’ll get you a sweatshirt for the season,” he says.

That’s almost three months away. A lot can change in that time.

“I’d like that.”

He walks me to my car and even goes so far as to open the door for me.

“Thanks for coming over.”

He rests one arm across the top of the door and braces the other on the edge of the roof, caging me in the small space. Is he going to make a move? The tempo of my heartbeat kicks up ten notches behind my ribcage.

I want him to kiss me.

No, I don’t.

Do other people argue with themselves like this?

If he kisses me, it’ll change everything.
