“You can finish telling us about your new love interest now,” Murphy says.

Jesus. These guys are the worst when it comes to prying into each other’s business. Usually, I don’t have anything for them to be this interested in.

“There’s nothing to tell. I helped her and we’ve spent some time together since.”

“Did you knock boots yet?” Ryder asks.

“Knock boots?”

“Yeah, you know, have sex,” he clarifies.

“I know what knocking boots means. I’m wondering why you called it that.”

“I was using a phrase from your generation.”

“You know I’m only a handful of years older than you, which means we’re the same generation. And knocking boots originated in the old west and probably hasn’t been said since…” I rake my damp hair back from my face. “I don’t know when. Probably the eighties, you asshole.”

Ryder laughs. “Whatever. You still need to answer the question, Cap. Did you seal the deal?”

“I can’t believe I’m answering you, but no, I didn’t. She and I are friends.”

“Damn, Cap got friend zoned,” Murphy yells out.

“I didn’t get friend zoned by her. It’s more of a mutual zoning situation.”

“Is she hot?” Ryder asks.

“She’s beautiful.”

“Then why aren’t you banging her already? Do you suffer from E.D.?”

“Who’s Ed?” Murphy asks.

“Not Ed, you dumbass. The letters E and D stand for erectile dysfunction,” Ryder explains.

I catch Darius covering the bottom half of his face to hide his laughter.

“No, I don’t have E.D. Despite my exceptionally well-functioning dick, I’m not sure if Rori and I should cross the line.”

“Why the fuck not?” Murphy asks.

I know I’m going to regret sharing the reason with them, but it’s going to come out sooner or later.

“Her older sister was my girlfriend in college.” My confession is met with total silence and then they all start shouting at once.

Murphy’s eyes are wide as he points at me. “You old dirty dog, you.”

Ryder nods, looking at me as if he’s never seen me before. Like I’ve suddenly reached a higher level of respect. “Cap’s gonna be in a sister sandwich. Nom. Nom.”

A sister sandwich?

I don’t know where he comes up with this shit.

“There’s nothing wrong with starting out as friends. That’s what Evie and I did,” Darius says, being the one voice of reason for me.

“Before you guys go further off the rails, let’s get this train back on the tracks. When I dated Valentina, Rori’s older sister, we were barely adults. I don’t even think I had facial hair.”

“Did you have pubes?” Ryder asks.
