“Hey, beautiful.” I hear Kaiden call out.

I spin to the side and find him leaning back against the front of the large building. He pushes off the rough surface and saunters over to me like a man who’s self-confident. And why wouldn't he be with everything he’s accomplished in his life?

I’m happy to see him, and my wide smile shows it. “I didn’t expect to see you.”

He loosely wraps one of his arms around me. “I know, but I wanted to surprise you. It’s your first day and that’s a huge milestone in your life.”

“I love you, Kaiden. You’re so good to me.”

“You haven’t seen anything yet, baby.” He pulls his arm from behind his back, holding out a beautiful bouquet of purple and white roses. “Congratulations. I’m so proud of you.”

I snatch the wrapped bundle, shoving my face down inside the plastic to inhale their scent. “Thank you so much. You don’t know this, but no one but you has ever given me flowers.”

When I was recuperating at home after the mugging, he filled the house with sunflowers to cheer me up.

“Really? Why didn’t you mention it before now?”

“I guess it was a reminder of my horrible taste in men before you came along. Or maybe I didn’t want to inflate your ego. I’ll let you decide which one is correct.”

He pulls me closer, brushing his nose along mine. “I think there’s some truth to both options.”

“And you’d be right,” I whisper against his lips before they close over mine.

CHAPTER22

KAIDEN

“Calista, you’re a lifesaver,”I say, shoving the final plastic container in the back of her SUV.

“Thanks, Kaiden. You know I’m always available when you need anything. You’d think with my brother Darius being a professional hockey player that my business would be booming, but it’s not.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll see what I can do to help with getting word out about how amazing your catering services are.”

“That’s nice of you. I really appreciate it.”

“No problem,” I say.

“I better get going. I’ve got a dragon birthday cake to bake for tomorrow afternoon.” She waves her hand.

“Thanks again.” Stepping to the side of the driveway, I watch her back out. As she’s pulling away, Ryder and Murphy pass by her. They park on the street, keeping the driveway open.

I walk down to meet them and help them carry their stuff inside. I set down the large cooler without knocking over the stack of towels on top of it.

Ryder corners me before I can move. “Who was the goddess that just pulled out of your driveway?”

“In the SUV?”

He nods.

“That’s Calista, the caterer.”

His eyes grow wide. “The one who cooked for Murphy’s party too?”

“Yes, and don’t even think of digging into any of the food before the party officially starts.” I point at him in warning.

“I’ll do my best.” He smirks. “But, goddamn, it smells good in here. Had I known the caterer was so gorgeous I would’ve come over earlier and been her taste tester.”

“Hold on, Romeo. Before you get too excited, you need to know Calista is Darius’s older sister.”
