“Letme go!Letme go!”Andistruggled and fought but they were both extremely strong.

“Oof!Betterstun her, too,” one of them grunted, asAndimanaged to elbow her in the stomach. “Makeher easier to handle.”

“Goodidea—do it,”ChiefStern-son nodded.

Thedeputy pulled a weapon and something sharp piercedAndi’supper arm.Immediately, the world began to look fuzzy around the edges.

Shepeered myopically down to where the thing had bitten her and saw it was a black dart, like the one that had broughtCadedown.

“Noooo…” she whispered, her words coming out slurred. “No, you can…can’t.Hafta…to getCadeback to…to theMotherShip…”

Butthen the blurriness spread and everything started spinning around her.Anditried to fight the drug they must have given her, but her body betrayed her by going limp.

“Oof—she’s damn heavy!” she heard one of the women complain.

Andthat was the last thing she heard before darkness ate the world.

ANDI

Andiwoke up with the worst headache of her life.

“Ohhhh!” she groaned, clutching at her temples which were pounding like a second and extremely painful heartbeat. “OhmyGod, thathurts!”

Toher surprise, someone answered her.

“I’mafraid we’re both going to endure a lot more pain than just a little hangover headache from their drugs,” a familiar voice said.

Turningher head,Andisaw it wasGoodieBo-long.Shewas sitting on a narrow cot in the cell besideAndi’s.Wait—she was in acell?

“Whatis this place?” she asked, looking around in confusion at the iron bars, the dirty floor, and the bucket in the corner—she really didn’t want to know whatthatwas for.

“Inthe town jail, of course,”GoodieBo-long said dryly. “It’srather ironic, don’t you think?”

“Ironic?”Andiblinked. “What?”

“ThatIcreated and released theMagroagaricustrisporusand so was able to lock up all the menIhated in my life, and yet nowIfindmyselflocked up because of my accomplishments.”GoodieBo-long sighed dramatically.

“Idon’t think youraccomplishmentsare why they locked you up,”Andisaid, wincing as she sat up on the narrow cot she’d been lying on. “ChiefStern-son said the charges against me were ‘having indecent and carnal relations with aManimal.’I’mpretty sure you’re in here for the same thing.”

“You’reright, of course—the stupid prudes!”GoodieBo-long got up and started pacing. “I’vegiven them everything they could ever want!Freedomfrom the men oppressing them—freedom to have a life outside their home—freedom to fuck any and every male who takes their fancy and how do they repay me?Likethis!”Shegestured at the dank jail cell around them. “I’mtelling you, it’s not fair!”

“Whatare they going to do to us, do you think?”Andiasked apprehensively. “Andwhat are they going to do toCade?Theytook him out right before they got me.”

“Yes, they got myManimalstoo.Letme see, who didIhave with me?”GoodieBo-long frowned. “Ohyes—it wasMannyandGobi.”Shesighed. “Mypoor, dearGobi.Mannycan fend for himself butGobiis such a good boy he won’t even fight to defend himself!”

“Ishe really your stepson?”Andiasked, unable to help her curiosity. “Imean, really?”

“Ifyou must know, yes—he is,”GoodieBo-long said stiffly. “ButI’monly ten years older than him.Hewas around twenty whenTheIncidentoccurred.”

“TheIncidentyoucaused,”Andireminded her—she was tired of being polite. “Doyou think the people who took us know that?”

“Idon’t think so—not thatIcare.”GoodieBo-long lifted her chin defiantly. “They’llpunish us just the same, no matter what they know.”

“Whatdo you mean?Whatkind of punishment do you think they’re going to give us?”Andidemanded. “Andwhat aboutCade?”

“Oh, never fear, my dear—yourManimalwill be there,”GoodieBo-long said dryly. “Infact,I’mfairly certain that he will bepartof your punishment.”
