I’m frozen in place, the beer bottle perched against my open lips as I catch sight of Grace stripping out of her sundress and then lowering herself into the pool.

A few of us are in the kitchen but most people are out in the backyard. The music changed from pop to country a few minutes ago, and Leo’s buddy Max, who’s playing DJ, was eating it up when a few of the girls broke into a sexy line dance. Grace was sandwiched between Skylar and a girl who has to be her twin, and the three of them were turning heads. When the song ended, the girls laughed when everyone started clapping and whistling, and that’s when Grace lifted her hair up and wiped the sweat from her neck with her free hand.

She’s hot, in both the literal and figurative sense of the word, and now it’s like I’m watching the scene unfold in slow motion as she unties the sash at her waist and then opens herself up like a present to reveal the most rocking body I’ve seen in a long time. The girl has curves for miles, and her suit is made of crisscrossing strips of fabric that are struggling to rein them in.

I’m damn near drooling when Leo taps my shoulder and laughs, bringing me back down to earth. “Down, boy.”

“Huh?”

“See something you like?”

I take a long pull off my beer, thankful that I’m off to the side and therefore out of sight for the most part. “Shut it, Leo. She’s engaged last I heard.”

He nods in agreement. “Last I heard.” He shrugs, finishes his beer and takes my empty bottle before heading back towards the fridge. “Ben told me you’re breaking out a new model today. What are you waiting for? Go get in the pool.”

“Were all of you engineering nerds gossiping again?”

“We prefer to call it shop talk.”

“Itispretty cool. I used my running attachment this morning, then swapped it back out and went on a ten-mile ride.”

“Are you training for a triathlon?”

“Maybe.” But my smile gives me away. “I’ll start off with a sprint length and then hopefully work my way up.”

“How is the carbon running foot?”

“Unbelievable, and the knee joint makes me stable on uneven surfaces when I’m running. It’s everything, though. Basic activities like going up and down stairs are so much easier. I keep looking down at it, amazed.”

“You can thank the engineering nerds for that.”

“I do owe you nerds a debt of gratitude.”

“So, are you going in?”

“I think I might wait until Monday. I’m meeting Ben at the pool on campus. I had to call him twice today to walk me through a few technical issues, just with interchanging the components. Easy stuff, but it’s new to me.”

“I like the shiny finish on this one,” Skylar says as she opens and closes the screen door. “Way better than the skin tone. It’s got thatTerminatorvibe.”

“That’s what I was going for.”

“What are you all doing inside? There’s burgers that need a grillin’ and women who need dance partners.”

And the way Leo answers, “At your service, baby,” leaves me feeling more than just a little bit jealous. The looks and the words that pass between the two of them are something that I envy. I want what they have.

I walk around them with a sudden urge to escape, but my timing sucks.

As I step out into the yard, Grace is making her way back out of the pool, her hips swaying with each movement as she makes her way up the stairs. She reaches behind her when she’s back on the deck, water dripping down her body as she tugs the fabric of her suit down to cover that gorgeous round ass. I have to look away. I’m damn near salivating for this woman I barely know, and there’s a force drawing me towards her that’s as powerful as it is senseless.

She belongs to another man.

I head towards a few guys over by the grill but don’t make it halfway there before I’m intercepted.

“Hey, I know you.”

Grace wraps herself in a towel, fastening the end before reaching up to free her hair from the band holding it in. I’m struck dumb for a moment as the curls tumble down and over her shoulders.

“Owen, right?”
