“He’s a handful, I’ll give him that, but he’s no criminal, Mr. Hamilton. Liam would never steal.”

“They said there’s footage of your nephew wearing a hoodie in the parking lot putting a large box into his car.”

“Footage ofsomeoneputting a case of lobster tails intosomecar. It wasn’t him.”

“Did they give your nephew a chance to explain?”

My uncle lets out a sigh. “You don’t know Liam. He’s proud. Too proud to plead his case. He told Thomson he didn’t do it, but wouldn’t answer any of their other questions, so they fired him.”

“Thomson said an anonymous tip came in. Someone called to report that an employee was stealing from the club and selling stock to a local restaurant. To the restaurant where Liam just happens to cover some shifts as a bar back. You have to admit, Danny, that doesn’t sound good.”

My uncle shoots back, “It sounds awfullyconvenientto me. I’m not blind where my nephew is concerned, but I’m also not blind to the fact that he’s an easy target. Some of the kids at this club have more motive to steal than he does.”

“What are you implying?”

“Not implying, stating facts. Liam doesn’t do drugs or have other expensive habits like some of the members’ children.”

There’s silence for a moment before my uncle adds, “I believe Liam. If they fire him, I’ll be handing in my resignation immediately.”

“Give me a few days, Danny. Let me look into this.”

I want to tell Mr. Hamilton not to bother, or really, I want to tell him to take his concern and shove it.Let me look into it…Give me a few days. You and the rest of them can fuck right off.

I hate these people.

Each and every one of them.

Chapter Seventeen

SARAH

I am fit to be tied.

I had no intention of ever speaking to Parker again, but he’s given me no choice.

No, I don’t know Liam all that well, but I would bet my life that he’s innocent.

I march right past Penny, ignoring her weak but surprised greeting. I can feel her eyes on me as I make my way to the landing next to where Logan’s sailboat is docked. There are other people working on their boats and a junior sailing class is in session, but I don’t care who’s watching or listening.

“Parker?” I call his name louder when I get no response, and it’s another full minute before Logan makes his way topside while buttoning up his rumpled oxford shirt.

“Can I help you with something?” Polite words, but oh so rude and condescending the way they’re delivered by this entitled ass.

“I’m looking for Parker.”

He purses his lips and nods as if he’s giving my words serious consideration. “Kind of got the gist of that from you shreiking his name.”

I ignore the dig. “Is he here?”

He cocks his head to the side. “Do you see him here?”

“Logan, I have no time for your crap. Tell Parker that if this is his way of getting back at me, he’s pathetic.”

“Can you be more specific?”

“An anonymous tip to the club’s director about stolen goods? Setting an innocent person up for a felony charge? Remind him that making a false police report isalsoa felony.” Cocking my head to the side, I add, “Will you pass that along, Logan?”

“Sarah, I seriously have no idea what you’re babbling about.”
