“Huh?”

“Who was it? What did he do?” Dan’s chest squeezed. How could any of the boys do something like this?God, when I find who did this, so help me—

“What’s up?” Boyd and Patrik had finally poked their heads out of their tents.

“Shh!” He shook his head at them as Sarah looked distractedly around. He gently clasped her trembling arms. “Sarah, look at me.” His heart continued racing. He took a deep breath to calm down. “Did you get a look at him? Who did this?”

Sarah finally focused those big green eyes on him. “What?”

He leaned closer. “Sarah, what happened?”

“It…it was—”

“It was what, Sar?”

She gulped. “It was a mouse.”

“A mouse?” Dan stilled. How many years had he used up in the last five minutes, worried over a mouse? He dropped his hands and stepped back. “All this because of a mouse?”

She blinked. “A mouse was sitting on the top of my sleeping bag, staring at me.” She shuddered. “Ihatemice.”

Dan stifled a snicker and turned back to Boyd and Patrik, who still watched them anxiously. “Mouse.”

They smirked wearily before disappearing back into their tents, but he soon heard their smothered laughter. It triggered something, and his chuckles bubbled up and escaped, unable to be restrained any longer. He walked away from the tents so as not to wake anyone else, his sides hurting as he struggled to keep in the laughter.

Sarah stood scowling, arms crossed, as he slowly walked back. “It’s not funny.”

“It is.” Another spurt of laughter gurgled up. Man, he must be tired.

“Stop it.”

“Can’t.” He couldn’t stop the sloppy grin. She was too funny.

Sarah moved toward her tent. “I should wake Georgia.”

He gently caught her arm. “Why? In case the big bad mouse gets her?” She nodded and another chuckle escaped him. “I think Georgia is tough enough to deal with a mouse. And if she hasn’t woken up with all your screaming, then I don’t think she’ll wake easily now.”

Sarah turned back to him. “Well, I can’t sleep there.” She rubbed her hands up her bare arms, shivering. “I’m going to stay up.”

Dan groaned. “Seriously? I don’t think the mouse would even be in there anymore. I’m sure it ran off as soon as you started screaming. Most creatures would’ve.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I’m not asking you to stay up. I’ll be fine. But I amnotsleeping in there.” She shuddered. “I think it was in my sleeping bag. Urgh.” She did a crazy squirming move that made him laugh again.

“Do you want to swap sleeping bags? Mine’s new, with no mice colonies living there.”

She seemed to consider it for a moment, then ducked her head. “Thanks, but I’ll just put some warm clothes on and stoke the fire or something. I’ll be right.”

He sighed. “Get your sleeping bag.”

“But the mouse?”

“I’ll check it for you.”

She shook her head. “No. I’ll just change.”

He must have a gift. Sometimes the words were just there. “As long as it’s not in your clothes.”

Sarah’s jaw sagged. “You think it’s in my clothes? Oh no!” She started shaking again.
