“Sam, Ange, Boyd.”

“Really?” Huh. “They all said that?”

“Maybe not always in so many words.”

He leaned closer and touched her cheek. “Sar, I only ever want to see you happy.”

She glanced up, a small smile playing around her lips. “Come on, admit it. Maybe a little bit of a hero complex?”

He shook his head. “I couldn’t be your hero yesterday.”

“But you were. You scared the bear away when I froze.” She shivered. “I was so frightened.”

“Yeah, but you didn’t show it.” He swallowed. “If you stay in Canada long enough, we’ll have you wrestling bears in no time.”Please stay, please stay.

Her eyes widened. “Dan, I…” She bit her lip.

He held his breath.

“Oh, Dan, I’ve missed you so much.” She flung herself into his arms.

He wrapped her close, drinking in her scent as her hair tickled his nose. “I missed you too. I’m so glad you’re safe,” he murmured. “I’ve never been so scared as when I saw that bear.”

She shuddered. “I’ll never look at teddy bears the same way, that’s for sure.”

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw you shouting.”

“Oh.” She squirmed slightly. “Did you hear any of it?”

“Not really.” He felt her shoulders relax. “Is that a good thing?”

The murmur from his chest sounded suspiciously likemaybe.

He grinned, then leaned back, gently tilting her chin. “I still don’t get how you can be scared of a mouse yet can face down a bear.”

“Maybe it comes from hanging out with you so much. All your toughness must be rubbing off on me.”

He lifted a hand to trace her cheekbone with his thumb. “I don’t think so, Miss Maguire. I suspect you’ve always been a lot tougher than you look. But then, that’s not difficult”—his fingers slid to the back of her neck—“when you look so…”

Her face lifted to his, her green eyes enormous, her lips soft and enticing. Their last kiss had been so amazing. His heart danced in anticipation.

He drew close and brushed the softest of kisses across her mouth.

Heart tingling, he drew back, smiling as she slowly opened her eyes.

“Oh.” Her cheeks glowed. “So, you’re really not interested in Ella, then?”

“Never was, never will be.”

“And you don’t have any girlfriends stashed away somewhere?”

“Of course not.”

“And I’m not a little summer project for you after all?”

Words weren’t going to cut it. He would have to show her. Even if it took the rest of his life. He picked up her hand and kissed the back of it, smiling as she caught her breath. He glanced up. “Sar, what are you doing today?”

“John and Ange come back late tonight, but I don’t have anything planned.”
