“Is that everyone?” Knox asked, looking over the list we had drawn up.

It had been Halley’s idea, wanting to give closure to the families that could possibly lose someone tomorrow. I had to admit, it was a good idea. And it truly showed how kindhearted my woman was. If only she wasn’t the one who had to go up against Willow tomorrow. The thought had fury burning underneath my skin, but I knew there was nothing I could do. Halley was the only Enchantress that could harness the distinct power, the only one who could truly restore the rightful energy back to Agrum Di Vinum.

“That’s everyone. They’re all getting the rundown of the plan for tomorrow.” Wilder answered Knox. “Which, by the way, what exactly is the plan?”

It was a good question. Knox hadn’t seen much, only that we would all fight, until Halley was able to get to Willow. And then from there, we didn’t know.

“The plan is to not die.” Knox deadpanned.

I couldn’t help but snort at his words. “Great plan. Let’s see how that works out. One hundred of us against how many did you say? Thousands?”

Knox rolled his eyes, pushing against my shoulder, before looking around the crowd. “I’m going to go find my parents. I know my dad volunteered to fight and I want some time with them before tomorrow.”

Wilder and I nodded, watching as he walked away, before heading into the castle together. I knew that Halley was spending time with Kalani, enjoying some time together, and I didn’t want to interrupt them. Wilder must have had the same thought because he followed me through the hallways, until we reached an empty sitting room. The castle had way too many of them.

Sitting on opposite couches, I waited for him to speak. I knew he wouldn’t have followed me for no reason. Unless he just wanted the company.

“I wanted to say thanks.” He started and I raised my brows, waiting for him to continue. “You followed my stupid ass outside the shield every day for four months. Not many people would be dumb enough to do that.”

I knew that under his snarky tone, he meant his words. Neither of us spoke our feelings too much, but I had to admit I had grown fond of the Drax.

“Couldn’t have the strongest Drax alive dying on us. Then who would lead the Guard?”

My words weren’t much, but I knew he understood what I was really saying. I couldn’t have him dying on me. I didn’t have many people that got me. Even less people that wanted to be in my company. And yet the asshole across from me was one of them.

“Wouldn’t want you to die either. Then who would go around frowning at everyone?” Wilder added and I smirked.

See, he got me. We didn’t need flowery words. I’d save those for our girl.

“And tomorrow, you can’t die either.” Wilder said and I felt his words in my chest.

I thought of the words he said earlier in the library. That he would be the man that would do anything for the ones he loved. And I knew that tomorrow, he’d risk his life for mine. Just as I would for him.

Before I could say anything else, fiery hair entered my vision, Halley taking a seat on the floor between the two of us. And she sure was a sight for sore eyes. I don’t think I would ever see a more beautiful woman in my life. Which meant that she couldn’t die tomorrow either.

“You done with your girl time?” I asked, moving over to the couch Wilder sat on, grabbing her on my way. Stuffing her between the two of us, I rested my arm along her shoulders, tightly grabbing Wilder’s, conveying without words that I was there for him, just like I had been the last four months.

“Yeah, she wanted to go spend time with her family and Maeve.” Halley responded, curling her feet underneath her and cuddling closer to the two of us.

“No being heroes tomorrow, you hear me? You fight, but don’t you dare risk your life for mine.” Halley instructed; her voice strong.

I glanced at Wilder over her head, his gaze meeting mine, and I saw my thoughts reflected. No matter what she said, we both knew that she was the most precious Divine on this realm and the next. And if push came to shove, we would both lay down our lives for hers.

Noticing our gazes above her head, Halley gripped both of our faces in her slender hands. “I’m serious. You may think you’d be saving my life, but all you’d be doing is leaving me. And I can’t lose either of you. I can’t lose any of you.”

Her eyes looked faraway as she spoke and I knew she was thinking about Eli. Even though the optimistic Ethos annoyed me half the time, I couldn’t deny that knowing Willow controlled him bothered me. He was trapped in his head, probably wishing he could be here, Halley in his arms. And on the other hand, I didn’t want to think about what Willow’s control of him meant. Eli was a powerful weapon and now he was on the other side.

“I can’t promise you that, sweetheart. I’m no hero, but I would sacrifice the world if it meant keeping you safe.” I told her when her gaze came back to us.

The fire I loved so much burned at my words, but before she could speak, I sealed my mouth with hers, tasting her lips. Her tongue reached out to mine, tangling intently, heat building between the two of us. But as much as I wanted this moment with her, I knew one man who needed it more. Breaking away, I nipped at her lips before giving her the last piece of my heart.

“I will love you in life and death. And if loving you means I’m killed tomorrow, then I’ll go out with the memory of you in my heart.”

Chapter Twenty-Six

Halley

Madden left before I could respond, but I knew that he felt my love for him. It was in each touch, each look, each moment we were able to steal away together. Leaving us behind, I cuddled closer to Wilder, wondering if he felt the same when we touched. Did he know that with every moment, every time he opened up further, I was slowly falling for the man he truly was? Not the mask he had hidden behind when we first met, but the man he had revealed to me over time.
