Flashing to Halley’s side, I tore out the throat of the shadowed creature at her side, before grabbing her waist and spinning her towards me. Pressing my lips to hers, I ignored the chaos around me, focusing on the woman in my arms.

“I love you, princess. Till the day I die, even if that’s today, I will love you.”

Her eyes widened at my admission, before our lips clashed once more, passion in the taste.

“I love you, Wilder. Until my last breath.”

More attackers descended on us then and I knew it was time to get back to battle. This war was far from over. Picking my speed back up, I continued to take down as many Dark Divines as I could, their bodies falling to the ground seconds before they even had the time to see me. I was on a streak, my body refusing to tire, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a group of Shifters condense on Madden’s tiger form, all lunging at once and taking him to the ground.

Without a thought, I departed from my current path, heading towards him. His body was on the ground, six creatures attacking him with bites and claws. As quick as I could, I descended on the first creature, my fangs meeting their meaty flesh.

Turning swiftly, I reached the next creature, their fate the same as the last. Over and over, I tore the life from the creatures, until Madden’s blood-spattered form was revealed. With battered breath, he shifted into his human form and I saw the deep gashes adorning his body. The worst was on his right arm, cut deeply at the elbow, the rest of his arm barely hanging on.

“I thought I told you not to die today.” I huffed out at him, falling to my knees as I took in his battered body.

A liquid laugh left him and I knew the injuries weren’t only skin deep. He was internally bleeding.

“Who says I’m dying asshole? I have some fight left in me.”

Shaking my head, I tried to crack a smile, but none came. I knew how serious this was. Searching for Halley, I couldn’t spot her in the crowd and I knew there weren’t many options. Using all my strength, I lifted Madden’s body off the ground, flashing away from the fight and finding a hidden corner among trees to drop him.

Madden tried to fight me off, begging me to let him rejoin the fight, but as his words slurred, I shook my head at him. There was no way in hell he could rejoin the fight. I wasn’t even sure if he could lift his head currently.

Crouching down at his side, I grabbed his head in my hands, forcing him to look me in the eyes.

“You listen to me. You’re going to stay alive. You are not going to die until this fight is over and Halley can heal you. You’re my brother and I’m not losing any more of my family. You got that?”

Madden’s eyes began closing as I spoke and I lightly shook him, begging him to hold on. For me and for Halley. Snapping his eyes open, he met my gaze, finally speaking.

“I won’t die. Protect our girl for me.” His eyes began to close as he spoke and I hesitated, wondering if I should stay with him.

But as I pondered the question, more screams broke out and I knew my fight wasn’t over. If these were Madden’s last words, I would die making sure they came true. Sprinting away from him, I searched the chaos for Halley, knowing I would do everything in my power to make sure she stayed alive.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Eli

Destruction ensued around me. My mind warring with itself as I brought men and women to their knees, their screams of agony echoing inside my head as I wondered if this was truly what I wanted. One part of me begged for this to stop. To turn my power onto those at my back. While the other part, the side in control, pleaded for me to not stop. Telling me that this was the only way to save my people.

Walking through the grouping of people, I found a crowd of people I recognized.Ethos.My brain told me.Your people. You don’t want to hurt them. But even as the thoughts bled through my head, my body refused to listen. Grasping onto my power, I thrust it out, bringing each and every one of them to their knees. They held their hands as the pain took over their bodies.

“Eli, please,” a feminine voice begged and somewhere in the back of my head I knew who it was. Knew I didn’t want to hurt her. But the rest of me didn’t care.

Racketing up my power higher, I watched as their eyes rolled into the back of their heads, their brains turning off from too much pain. A body could only take so much before it shut down. Leaving the crowd of useless Divines on the ground, I strode along, not a care in the world. I knew these people wouldn’t hurt me. They couldn’t. I meant too much to them.

“Eli, come here.” Willow’s voice called from the back of her army.

Following her command, I ignored the crowd of Divines in front of me, walking back to where she stood. Her smile was wide as she watched the Divines die before her. I found myself smiling along with her, even though I knew I wasn’t happy.I didn’t want this.

Willow stepped towards me, gripping my shoulder tightly, the control of the Darkness seeping farther into my brain with her contact.

“It’s time. You know what to do.” She urged, pushing me back towards the battle and I knew what she wanted.

Searching the crowd, I found my first victim. Channeling my powers into him, I altered his emotions. I watched in anticipation as Knox slowly lowered his sword from the Drax in front of him. And with one more burst of my power, my work on him was done. With a swift turn, he raised his sword once again, slicing into the Seer that stood at his side. The Seer not covered in Darkness.

Moving my eyes, I found Wilder next. My mind begged me not to do this, but my power pushed out nonetheless. Wilder must have felt the influx of power because his body shuddered, as if trying to fight me off. However, I couldn’t allow it. Pressing my power harder at him, I watched raptly as his direction changed, sprinting towards a group of Shifters on his side.

I watched intently as the two men tore through their own people, decimating their numbers. I briefly wondered if they felt as I did. As if their minds and bodies were no longer theirs to control. However, the thought quickly vanished, my eyes now locked on the woman taking down most of the Divines.
