“Think you’ll find,” I say, meeting the guy’s eye, “she’s with me.”
“Sure thing, Sheriff, but you’re outta jurisdiction.”
Somehow, I don’t clock him for thinking I’m my brother. “Thanks, man.”
I take her from him and into my arms just as the song changes.
“You know,” she says as I pull her in against me, “I’m not the door prize.”
“I leave you for a minute and you’re anyone’s. This isn’t New York, you know. It’s a small town.”
She laughs. “I’m a little mad. You’re a charming chauvinist.”
“She thinks I’m charming.”
Sidney rubs her cheek against my chest, and that something shifts inside me.
This woman is just right, here and now and in my arms, and the song is slow and . . . and I think I just might want to do something stupid.
I don’t. Of course, I don’t. I’m better than that.
Her arms slide around me, and she makes a soft little sigh.
Fuck, maybe I’m not better than that. Maybe I’m worse because things are definitely stirring.
And this woman, with her bundle of contradictions, has a way of getting under the skin.
I know fuck all about her.
I know enough.
“Sidney,” I murmur, my hands sliding slowly down over the top of her ass.
Her breath makes a funny little sound that makes my heart thrum loudly.
“I think, Princess, I’m gonna do something real stupid.”
She looks up at me, all soft-eyed, all invitation. “You are?”
I dance her slowly away from the others, back to that dark corner beyond where we ate, and I move so she’s against the wall and I’m against her.
“Yeah.”
“What are you going to do?”
I slide a hand under her chin and tip her face up to me. “This.”
Then I kiss her.
