It’s a little house, that’s set above a huge garage. Because it’s Mack, gotta have his own garage.

The door opens, and he looks at me, making me want to suddenly turn and run, making me want to fight. He crosses his arms. “I didn’t know princesses made fuckin’ house calls.”

“I want answers.”

“About what?”

“Why you stormed out?”

He sighs and leans against the door jamb. He looks good enough to eat, so good my knees wobble. “I didn’t storm out on anything. I walked. Because we were done.”

“And that’s it?”

“Yes. Because I don’t play these games. You know it. I told you. We both said what we said.”

The anger rises in me, and irrational. I wanted this, and now I don’t. “You were meant to fight.”

“Games.”

“I think,” I say as nobly as I can, suddenly feeling like an idiot, “that I should go.”

Something softens in his eyes, though he doesn’t smile. He catches my hand, holding me there. “Or . . .”

“Or what?” I ask.

“Or admit it. You didn’t come to my place to demand answers. You came here for me.”

ChapterSixteen

Mack

She stares at me and my heart’s beating fast. Color is high in her cheeks and from her eyes, Sidney’s had maybe one too many.

But she’s not slurring or swaying. It’s just that she’s here and who the fuck gave her my address? I’m not sure if I want to kiss them or kick their ass.

Because temptation is so fucking high and resolve rock bottom. My princess looks like a gift from the gods I want to unpack.

I don’t move. The hot, dry air holds an undercurrent of a different heat, one that comes from touching her, from being so close to her.

If Sidney had come here stone-cold sober it would be different. It would mean—actually I don’t know what the fuck it would mean. She wants me, we both know that. Wanting me isn’t the issue, her taking a step of her own volition is.

I don’t know where that step’s gonna lead, but I do know with what she’s said about her mother that Sidney’s gotta take it.

“Yes,” she says, shocking me, “I did.”

I’m not shocked I’m right. I’m fucking shocked she’s admitting it.

“What am I gonna do with you, Princess?” I ask softly.

She looks away. “I should go. Sarah and Leland gave me a key—”

“So that’s how you got my address.” Across the street a curtain twitches and no doubt this is going to be some kind of wild orgy according to the Norhill gossip mill by morning. “And you’re not going anywhere.”

Before she can respond, I tug her into my arms and kiss her softly.

“I’m not?”

“Those space cats got themselves pink spots so who knows what they can do now. Besides, it’s late and you’ve been drinking.”
