I think apart from her obstinance and deciding to get all secretive and lock her doors, she’s pretty much perfect.

“Mack?”

“Yeah, Princess?”

She shifts in my arms, so I’m spooning her, and she takes my hand and holds it. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“Doing what you accused. And then I was miserable after you left. Then I had some drinks and decided I was mad, so I came here. I told myself to yell at you for walking off, but really, I think I wanted to see you. I wanted this.”

I kiss the top of her head. Her hair smells sweet and clean, that pretty Sidney scent.

“It’s okay. Just don’t do it again. Talk to me. And Sidney? We should talk.”

She doesn’t answer.

“That call I got, I never told you about, but they asked about you, as did rat man. This is more than your family, isn’t it?”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she says, voice tight.

I breathe out. “You’re pissing me off.”

“I should go.”

“Fuck, Princess, we just talked about that. Use your fucking words, not coward feet. And where the hell are you going?”

She groans. “Maybe it’s what I do. Run. But . . .” She takes a breath.

I stay quiet because I think she wants to say something, and it’s hard, real hard.

“I might have accidentally stepped on toes before I left.”

I mull that over. It could be anything or nothing. “What toes?”

“It’s not why I left. I needed to get away, that’s all.”

I pull her closer. “What toes?”

“Toes.”

She’s downplaying whatever it is. But hardball doesn’t work with her, so to get more I’m gonna have to play it loose, sweet, pretend to accept what she thinks is finality of that word when it’s nothing at fucking all.

“Well, if you go about stepping on toes, Sidney, good thing you got me.”

“I don’t need you to do anything.”

She might say that, but she does. I’m going to find a way to get all the information I need. But I don’t say that.

“I’ll be your knight, okay?”

I will be that, not just to keep her safe, but because I don’t want her to go.

Sidney laughs. “I’m only passing through.”

I don’t say a thing.
