I take a swallow of the stout. “What of it?”

“She’s pretty. Nice. But reserved. You find out her story, Mack?”

I glance at my twin. “Some.”

He nods, and sips at his lager. He’s not on duty, or he wouldn’t be drinking, but he’s ready for something as it’s the weekend and summer. Who the fuck knows what out-of-towners might do. Or people from here.

The temperature’s rising, and the sky is cloudless.

I’m trying not to think of what happened back at the cabin. When she swallowed me down, when I lost it and took over. Then in the shower when I ate her out, making her come three times, when I fucked her from behind in there.

Nope, not letting myself think of that at fucking all.

“Look, the princess—” I ignore his cocked brow “—has some family shit.”

“C’mon, Mack. I know you, and you think there’s something else. I also know you’re sleeping with her, and sometimes that isn’t gonna solve anything.”

“Solves a few things.”

He laughs softly. “You know what I mean.”

“She’s passing through.”

“Why is . . . you’re not letting her leave. Her fucking Audi.” He sighs and takes another swallow. “That guy we saw? Had scumbag written all over him.”

Delicate fucking brother talk for criminal or at the least a guy who doesn’t mind dabbling on the other side of the law.

I nod to where Mom now sits with Sidney and Rose. Mom’s beaming, and Sidney . . . she’s all smiles. I can see she likes it here, likes my family. It’s obvious when she forgets herself, and loosens up, but she’s also so damn self-conscious it hurts.

What my brother sees as a woman may be hiding something he’s not gonna like, I see beyond that to the princess who’s maybe never felt free like she does more and more with me. Maybe her gran too. And Victor.

Whoever the fuck he is.

“Anyway,” Lawson says, “you’re sleeping with her, holding her car hostage, and you brought her. It’s interesting.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “I like her. It’s friends with benefits.”

Mentally I cringe at the term. I’ve used it, and it is what it is, but somehow with Sidney . . . yeah. I don’t like it.

“Friends. What I find so interesting.”

I’m saved by the arrival of Dakota and Sarah, who’s family by proxy. Sarah would be anyway, knowing Mom. But now she’s marrying Leland, it’s beyond settled.

Dakota comes up and steals her husband’s beer.

“I was drinking that, Wildcat.”

“You can get your fine ass up and get us both another. Do I look like I want your leftovers?”

“If this is weird sex talk,” I say, “I’m so outta here.” I start to rise.

Lawson waves me down. “They’re sleeping together, but . . . what was it? You like her, and you’re just friends with benefits.”

Her eyes narrow as they zero in on me. “You said that?”

“Is this pick on Mack day?” I shake my head and down another mouthful of the stout. “She’s passing through.”

“Interesting,” Dakota says.
