Page 86 of Burning Tears

“Not a doctor, kid.” But I find a smile as the baby starts to cry again. “But we got the best damn medics here. Now, stay by the car.”

She nods, and I get to work. “Donny? Don? Please come back. I’m sorry.”

I wince, I want to have one on one with that fucking guy. Hitting a woman. Coward. He’ll be in the holding cells and I’m betting my brother will have some choice words for him.

This fucker Donny popped the hood and went to town. For reasons best known to himself. At least he didn’t do much. Too hot for him to do any real damage. Just some spark plugs to reattach. I make short work of it and try not to think of Sidney and how I fucked up.

Some might say royally.

Some wouldn’t be fucking wrong.

It’s not even that I think she’s in some weird cahoots with Alpine. At least, not in the smoke-filled light of the night.

I just wanted . . .

I fucking wanted her to talk to me. Trust me. Be open.

Ah, shit. I want her to tell her parents to fuck off.

Sidney’s stronger than she thinks.

But she’s so used to them ruling her life, and doing things her way quietly she just slides back, from what I can see.

Donny’s arrived, and they’re talking. The truck’s going to run, so I go and throw open the back seat, right as the dude starts to get aggressive.

“Hey, Alison?” I ask, nice, light, and friendly. “Why don’t you and the baby get in the passenger seat, okay?”

She nods and does that.

“And Donny?”

He’s getting ready to climb into the back, but I grab him and push him up against the open door. I put my mouth against his ear.

“So, Donny?” I still have that pleasant tone going. I have it tight in my grip. “You think it’s fun to hit women?”

“Fuck you.”

“No thanks, you’re not my type.” I pause. “Think it’s manly?”

This time he mumbles something that sounds like no.

“See, if I ever find out you even think of touching Alison or the baby, I’m gonna fuck you up, show you want it’s like to be hit by someone bigger and stronger than you. Now, get in the fuckin’ truck, shut the fuck up, and play nice. And maybe, just maybe, I won’t find you, dump you somewhere where it takes years, if ever, to find your remains.”

With that, I stand back and let him get in.

Oh fuck.

Everyone is there when I pull up.

And I mean everyone.

I’m at the triage center, just near the sheriff’s, and Rose and Isaac are there, helping Alison and the baby from the car. I don’t let Donny out, as I fill in Rose as best I can with the baby and Alison.

“We got it, Mack.” She squeezes my arm, and warmth fills me as my little sister flips into action, calm, efficient, and brilliant.

I want to get home, to Sidney, but I need this taken care of.
