She smirked. “That’s like a perfect wedding and unicorns. They don’t exist.”

I chuckled. “I’m going to take your word for it. I haven’t gone unicorn hunting and I’ve certainly never planned a wedding.”

Yet.

When we landed, I had several cars waiting to whisk us to the office. We walked into a madhouse. Instead of our usual tasks, we all ended up helping out in the sales department. Even I was on the phone handling customer questions. When customers found out it was me, their shock was palpable through the phone.

“Order lunch,” I said to Macy, who was busy printing out packing slips.

She nodded. “Burgers?”

“Works,” I replied before jumping on another call.

She’d only been with us for a short time and was already an integral part of the team. Despite all Mabel’s amazing qualities, I couldn’t imagine her handling this crisis. Macy was printing packing slips while taking the calls that would normally come in to my desk. She was multi-tasking like I had never seen before. She was our leader. I was just the guy trying to keep his head above water.

“Lunch is in the breakroom,” Macy announced. “When I tap your shoulder, you’ve got twenty minutes. Make it count.”

I had to keep myself from laughing. The woman could command an army. No one questioned her. They all looked to her for guidance. Hell, I found myself asking her questions and it was my damn company. The line was selling out quick. It was Macy who kept track on a large white board she had brought in.

At five o’clock, I stepped up and shut it down. We had more than honored our commitment to the launch.

“Everyone, thank you!” I said from the front of the room. “I know we’ve had some pretty crazy launch days, but this one takes the cake. Despite all the chaos, you guys kicked ass. You are invaluable to me and this company. Thank you. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. I swear, I will find a way to thank you all properly. Let’s get through this week, and we’ll talk bonuses for the work you’ve done today—the work you’re going to be doing all week. Go home. Get some sleep and be prepared to do it all again tomorrow.”

They all seemed tired but in good spirits as they packed up for the day.

I made my way to my office, exhausted and ready for a cold beer. Macy followed behind me. “How are you?” she asked.

“I’m good, you?”

“Invigorated,” she said, smiling.

“What are your plans?”

“I’m supposed to be getting dinner with my mom and brother,” she said. “It’s kind of a standing date.”

“Understood,” I said. “Thank you for today. I don’t know if I’ve said it, but you’re amazing.”

“You have,” she said.

“Seriously, I’m not sure what I’m paying you, but you deserve more.”

She laughed and picked up my jacket from the back of my chair. “You need to go home. You look beat.”

I rolled down my sleeves and accepted her help to put my jacket back on. “I have a date with Dane and the Giants.”

“Oh, and that big-ass TV?”

“Yep,” I said. “And a few cold Coronas.”

She tapped my tie. “I think this is toast.”

I looked down at the mustard stain. “I’ve got plenty more.”

“I’m sure you do.”

I gave her a quick kiss, knowing we were alone. She patted my arm. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I’ll walk you out.”
