“I’ll tell you what I’m not going to do,” I replied. “I’m not rushing a damn thing. I’m going to let this blossom in its own due time.”

Ibarely had time to go home, drop off my suitcase, and then grab my car keys and head right back out. Mom and Brandon were already at the restaurant sipping drinks and talking. I slid into the booth of the old fifties diner my mother loved to visit.

“Sorry,” I said. “Work was crazy.”

“I thought you had the day off?” Mom asked.

“We were supposed to but there was a mix-up with some dates, and we all had to go straight from the airport to the office. It was a wild day.”

“How was Vegas?” Brandon asked. He pushed a glass of water at me. I eagerly grabbed it and sucked it down.

“Good,” I said. “Very good. Too short though. I could have stayed for another few days.”

Mom was looking at me with a knowing smile. At first, I hoped she wouldn’t say anything about Jon. Not in front of Brandon. I already knew his opinion on the matter. But then, I figured it may as well come out. If Jon and I were going to do this thing, Brandon was going to know. I didn’t want to hide anything from him. It would only end up blowing up in my face in the end.

“You’re glowing,” Mom said.

Brandon scrutinized my face. “No, she isn’t.”

“Yes, she is. I know that look.”

“What look?” Brandon asked.

“The look of love,” she said, smiling. “I take it things went well.”

“They did,” I said. “Very well.”

“What are you two talking about?” Brandon complained.

“I’ve met a man,” I answered.

“He was in Vegas?”

“Yes,” I said, laughing.

“He went to Vegas with you, right?” Mom clarified.

“He did.”

It was kind of fun to have Brandon left out and being very curious. He was my big brother and I didn’t think teasing him would ever get old. “Who are you talking about? You work with him?”

“I workforhim,” I answered.

That really confused him. “Wait, what?”

“Jon,” I answered.

He groaned and slapped a hand to his forehead. “You have to be kidding. I warned you about him. He makes girls fall for him but he’s never going to be serious. You can’t be with him. More like, you might think you are with him, but he’s not going to be with you. The man is a serial womanizer.”

“Brandon, you can’t tell your sister who she can and cannot date,” Mom scolded.

“I’m not trying to boss her around,” he argued. “I’m telling her he’s not what she thinks he is.”

“I know who he is,” I said. “I know you think you know who he is, but that was a while ago. He’s not that same man. Even if he was, he isn’t with me.”
