“Nah, just a minor sprain. We’ll get some ice and wrap it. All in all, you’re fine. The cut on your head is superficial. You don’t need stitches. I will want to keep an eye on you over the next few days, but you can just pop in. No need for you to stay in the infirmary.”

“Thank you,” Macy said.

“I’ll be right back,” the doctor said and walked out of the room.

Macy turned to look at me with tears in her eyes. She didn’t have to say a word. I knew exactly what she was feeling. I pulled her into my arms. Her face rested against my neck. I held her tight while she cried. The doctor opened the door but quickly left when he saw her sobbing. I rubbed her back and simply held her.

“You’re okay,” I told her. “You’re fine.”

She pulled back and wiped her eyes. “I feel so stupid.”

“Don’t feel stupid,” I said. “Accidents happen all the time. That’s why there is a doctor on board.”

She shook her head. “I don’t know why I’m crying. I didn’t get hurt. I didn’t die.”

“You went through a traumatic experience,” I said. “Getting emotional is natural.”

The doctor came back in with an icepack and an ace bandage. “I’m going to wrap this, and I think it would be best if you took it easy for the rest of the day. Keep the foot elevated and try not to put weight on it right away. No more jet skis. You hit the water hard enough to bruise you, from what I just learned.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“One of the guys that was out there said he was pacing you,” the doctor lectured. “At the speed you were going, it was a hard enough hit to cause a concussion. I don’t see any signs of that, but it wouldn’t hurt to lie back and enjoy the view with a Mai Tai and your feet up.”

“Are you prescribing a cocktail, doctor?” she asked.

“I’m saying you’re allowed to have some fun. Just stay off it for a while.”

I patted her shoulder. “I’ll make sure she does.”

The doctor wrapped her ankle and offered her crutches. She declined. I put her arm around my shoulders and helped her back to her room. I lifted her and placed her in bed and quickly put a pillow under her foot.

“Let me get you a blanket,” I said. “You’re still shivering.”

“I’m not cold,” she said.

“You’re in shock, not in the literal sense, but you just got the life scared out of you. Shivering is natural.”

I covered her up and looked down at her. With her safe and tucked in, my own adrenaline left me. I felt weak and had to sit on the edge of the bed. “Holy shit,” I breathed.

“Are you okay?” she asked and reached out to rub my shoulder.

I looked at her and shook my head. “No. I thought I lost you. I saw you hit the water with that fucking jet ski on top of you and I thought for sure you were gone. I’ve never been so afraid in all my life.”

“Thank you for saving me,” she said.

I took a few minutes to get my wits about me. She had scared the hell out of me. In the instant I saw her go down, I saw my own life flash before my eyes. I knew I didn’t want to waste another minute without her.

“Macy, I’m going to take full advantage of the fact that you can’t get up and run,” I said. “I have to try again. I explained the situation, but I never told you how I felt about you. I have true feelings for you. I don’t want to be with anyone else. I only want you. I’ve only wanted you since that first night together. After the morning after, I was pissed. I was hurt. I vowed to never let myself feel that way again. When you came back into my life, I didn’t want to love you, but dammit, it happened.”

“Jon, I heard you on the phone,” she said.

“What do you mean?”

“I heard you talking to someone about me and how the thing we had was nothing more than a revenge plot. You took me out and made me fall for you to get back at me. I told you I was sorry for the Vegas thing. I don’t understand why you would want to hurt me like that.”

I shook my head and tried to think of what phone call she was talking about. Then it hit me. The day the newspaper article dropped, Peter and I had been talking. “No,” I said. “Oh no, no, no. Shit. No.”

“I heard you,” she said. “I can’t keep letting you play with me.”
