“I’m fine,” I assured her. “I’m a little embarrassed by my stupidity. I should have known better. I was going way too fast and I’m not a practiced rider.”

“We all do silly things,” she said. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I got my brains scrambled for a second, a little cut on my head, and my ankle is sprained, but I’m fine. I wasn’t in the water long.”

Doris had a knowing smile. “Thank goodness for heroes on jet skis.”

“Indeed.”

“You let me know if you need anything,” she said. “Although I think you’re in good hands. Lucky you.”

She walked away and rejoined her husband. Jon returned with more seafood than I could ever eat. It was the thought that counted and that impressed me. He also brought a pitcher of beer and poured me a glass. Then to my embarrassment, he tugged an ugly plastic bib into the collar of my shirt.

“All set,” he said, grinning.

“If I’m wearing this bib, so are you,” I said.

“Of course.”

Over the next hour, everyone stopped by to check on me. I was a little embarrassed by the accident, but after hearing the stories of so many others who had been in similar situations, I no longer felt so ridiculous.

“How was your week?” I asked him once everyone had gone back to their own conversations.

“Uh, hell,” he answered dryly.

I laughed. “I meant, how was it in general? Not the me part. I saw you had a meeting with your accountant. You looked stressed.”

“Not about money,” he said. “Sales are great. We were going over the idea of expanding the company. It’s something I’m being pressured to do.”

“You don’t want to?”

“No,” he answered. “I don’t want to lose that small company feel. I think we’re plenty successful. I’ve got investors and a board who want more. I’ll have to go to bat to shut them down. It happens every six months or so. My dad never intended for the company to become some big, mainstream thing. He liked the idea of small and exclusive. I’m trying to stick to his wishes.”

“That’s very honorable.”

He leaned over. “Trust me, if you knew what I was thinking right now, honorable would not be the word you used.”

“Down boy,” I whispered. “Everyone has been very discreet and hasn’t called us out. Let’s not give them something to talk about now.”

He was pouting in the cutest, sexiest way for the rest of the night. When the DJ started playing music and asked people to get on the dance floor, I was a little bummed I couldn’t join them. I would have loved to dance with Jon.

“Everyone is distracted,” he said. “I think it would be a very good time to make our escape.”

“I don’t think I’m exactly stealthy right now,” I joked.

“This isn’t high school,” he said. “We’re two grown-ass adults. We can do what we want.”

“Okay, if you’re ready for the rumors, I’m ready. Take me to bed, mister.”

He got up and helped me to my feet. He practically carried me below. When we reached the hallway, he did pick me up. “Sorry,” he said. “I just don’t have that kind of patience. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a fucking week. I’m trying not to waste a minute.”

I was giggling as he practically sprinted down the hall to his room. I didn’t even question his decision to go into his room. It felt right. He gently placed me on the bed before stepping back and stripping out of his clothes. I started on mine, but he stopped me.

“I’ll do it,” he said.

“Your wish is my command,” I replied.

He undressed me with great care before lifting me and sliding me up the bed. He crawled over me, kissing me first while his hand caressed over my body. His mouth slid over my jaw, down to the crook of my neck.
