“Don’t be mad, little brother,” I joked and hit another. “One day when you grow up, you’ll be as good as me.”

“Let’s talk about wives,” he said.

It was his usual go-to insult. He was happily married. I wasn’t. I didn’t even have any hopes or wants to be married.

“Yeah, yeah,” I said.

CRACK!

My bat connected again. I grinned at my brother just as he missed his pitch. He could be married a hundred years, and I would always be better at baseball.

“Jessica and I have a friend,” he started.

“No.”

“Come on, she’s gorgeous. She does swimsuit modeling on the side.”

“On the side of what, the interstate?” I scoffed. “You set me up with a librarian last time. Do you remember that? I don’t know what in the hell you were thinking. She was the driest human being I’ve ever encountered. Even you and Jessica were bored out of your skulls listening to her stories about missing books. Watching paint dry would be more entertaining.”

“Okay, that was a miss, but I swear, this one is good,” he insisted. He swung and missed again. “She’s an accountant. Makes good money. Has her own townhouse. I know you would like her.”

“Bikini-model accountant? Nope.”

“Come on, you have to settle down eventually,” he said.

“Is that a rule? I must have missed that one.”

“Why aren’t you interested?” he asked. “Jessica and I have a great marriage. Mom and Dad had a great marriage. It’s not like you have bad examples to scare you off.”

“I’m not trying to find a wife,” I said again.

He let out a loud groan. “You cannot tell me this is still because ofher.”

“Who?”

We both knew who he was talking about. I wasn’t going to admit to anything. I had heard the lecture over and over. I was tired of hearing it. No one understood what happened that night. I couldn’t even explain.

All I knew was it changed my entire world.

“That girl in Vegas,” he said with disgust. “I don’t understand why you don’t just do something about it.”

“Like what? Get a time machine?”

“You have more money than God. Hire someone to find her,” he replied.

“Fuck that. I’m not going to chase down a woman that doesn’t want me. I could have given her the world. She walked away. That’s that. I beg no one for anything. I don’t think I’m a hard sell to begin with. If I have to flash my wealth to get her back, that’s not exactly going to lead to a healthy relationship, right?”

“She probably didn’t know who you were,” he said.

“So? And you think it’s better that she did know and stayed with me because of what I have?” I scoffed. “I don’t think so. I’m glad she didn’t know who I was. She showed her true colors. I don’t want a woman here with me just because I’m rich.”

“Track her down, give her a piece of your mind, and let her know what she missed out on,” he said.

“Seems like a waste of time and energy,” I replied. “I’m not doing it. Besides, I doubt she gave me her real name.”

“If you don’t want her, then it’s over,” he said, shrugging. “Just let it be done. Move on. You can’t let a one-night stand in Vegas derail your entire life. You should move on. You should get to find love and happiness. It was one night out of how many thousands on this planet?”

There wasn’t any point in trying to explain it was a lot more than just one night. It was my entire world in that one night.
