Page 4 of One Night in Vegas

“Don’t try and say you don’t feel it,” he said. “I know you do.”

I did feel a connection, but this was a drunken night in Vegas. “I do,” I said.

“I know,” he mumbled and held me a little closer.

I waited until he fell asleep before I extracted myself from his firm grip. I took a moment to drink in the sight of the most handsome man I had ever laid eyes on. “Goodbye,” I whispered.

I picked up my dress and tiptoed out to quickly get dressed. His flowery words were certainly tempting, but I knew it was the alcohol talking. It was my Cinderella moment. It was time to get back to my room before I turned into a pumpkin.

I felt a little guilty for not leaving a note. I hoped I didn’t regret it.

Ismiled before I even opened my eyes. I’d been drunk last night, but not drunk enough to not remember every exquisite detail of the woman I’d brought back to the penthouse. She probably thought I was a nutjob. I had basically professed my love for her after knowing her for less than an hour. It was certainly not something I had ever done before. I couldn’t explain why I did and said what I did. It was the one thing in my life I didn’t have to try and reason and explain.

It just felt right.

I opened my eyes and rolled over to greet the woman I was going to convince to elope with me this morning. “Macy?”

The bed was empty. “Macy,” I called out again.

I jumped out of bed, grabbed some underwear, and pulled them on. “Macy.”

Sunlight was streaming in through the tinted windows. The penthouse was completely empty. She was gone. I went back to the bedroom to look for a note. There was nothing. She just vanished. It was like she had never been there. Part of me had to check myself to make sure I hadn’t imagined the whole night.

It was real. I could smell her. If it hadn’t been for that perfume, I wouldn’t have believed it actually happened. But it did happen. She’d been there. I told her it was love at first sight, and she left like a thief in the night.

A thief with my damn heart. And maybe my pride.

That was fucked up. I’d finally found a woman I could see myself settling down with and she walked out on me. Last night, everything felt perfect. The sex was the best I ever had. She was unlike any other woman I had ever been with. There was a soul-deep connection. Even thinking it made me think I was being ridiculous. I wasn’t into that woo-woo bullshit. Life didn’t work out that way.

Instead of bitching about it, I stomped my way to the shower. The moment the water hit my back, I flinched. The scratches she’d left stung under the spray. It was just another reminder of the woman that ripped my beating heart from my chest.

After shoving my clothes into my suitcase, I headed down to the lobby. Part of me was hoping I might run into her. I’d be damned if I begged her to stay with me, but I wanted to look at her one last time. I wanted her to look at me and know exactly what she was missing out on.

“Jon!”

I turned in the direction of my brother’s voice. He was standing with our friends that had all flown into Vegas for his bachelor party. I dragged my suitcase behind me to join them. “You look well rested,” Peter said.

“Okay.”

“I thought you took that sweet little brunette home last night?” he joked. “Don’t tell me you passed out before you could get the deed done.”

“Trust me, the deed was done just fine.”

“Ah, you booted her out of bed after you got what you wanted,” Peter said, laughing. “Figures. You never let them get the bed warm.”

I offered a cocky smile. “I got what I needed. No reason to prolong the inevitable. She was on her way out before the sun rose.”

Lying wasn’t really my thing, but there was no way in hell I was letting them know I’d been humiliated by a woman. She all but ran away from me. My brother would never let me live it down. I had a reputation to uphold. My brother would laugh me right out of Vegas if he knew I had professed my love for a woman hours after meeting her. The icing on the cake was her running out on me. That was some good joke material.

“Maybe we should get some breakfast before we go to the airport,” I said.

“Anyone else hungover?” one of the guys asked.

“What time did you guys end up leaving?” I asked casually.
