Iwasn’t sure what she was doing here, but I had a feeling it was intentional. She’d rejected the job. She was only here because I walked out on her. Was she trying to win me over? Planning to sabotage me from the inside? She was up to something, and I planned on figuring out what it was before she could do any damage.

“I think that’s everything,” I announced at the end of the meeting.

Brian and the rest of the team filed out of the room. Only Macy and I remained.

“Shall we go?” I looked directly at her.

“You have nothing scheduled out of the office today,” she countered. “Your previous assistant left your schedule for the week. There is no mention of you working out of the office.”

“I think you forget this is my company. I run things. If I say I’m working out of the office, then I’m working out of the office. I have important business matters to take care of today. You, as my assistant, will need to be there to assist me.”

She rolled her eyes. “We both know that isn’t true.”

“I know no such thing.”

“Am I going to need anything?” she asked with resignation. “Will I need a pen and paper toassistyou?”

I smirked. “I would have thought you’d be a little more with the times. I think you’re probably ready to move into the digital age, don’t you?”

“What does that even mean?” she asked with a sigh.

“My previous assistant liked to do things the way she was used to,” I said. “She wasn’t a big fan of technology. Getting her to use the computer to arrange my schedule was a feat. I’ve purchased a new iPad for my assistant to use. It’ll make it easier for notes and scheduling. Our tablets will be synced so we can save a lot of extra paperwork.”

“Fine,” she muttered.

“But you’re not going to need that today,” I added.

She shot me a dirty look. “Why am I not surprised?”

“Shall we go?” I asked with a smile.

“This is your show.”

Damn straight it was. I led her out of the office. Technically, I had no plans to work out of the office today. I was flying by the seat of my pants with this whole thing.

I opened my car door and waited for her to get in. She wasn’t happy, which didn’t surprise me. She thought she was going to come in and sit at a desk while giving me fits with that damn outfit she was wearing.

She looked like she should be on a runway. The kind of runway that involved clothes coming off one article at a time. It was hot as hell.

I drove straight to a restaurant. The valet was already at the passenger door and helping her out. I tossed him the keys and joined her on the sidewalk.

“Do you own this place?” she asked.

“No. Why?”

“Then why are we here?” She popped a hip, turned out a foot, and crossed her arms over her chest. “Are you meeting someone for business?”

“No.”

“Then what are we doing here?” she asked irritably.

“I’m hungry,” I said, shrugging. “This is a restaurant. They serve food. Therefore, I will eat and no longer be hungry. If I starve, the company goes under. You can understand just how important this is, right?”

“Don’t be a smartass,” she snapped.

I ignored her grumpiness and got us a table for two. After a little prodding, she finally ordered a turkey sandwich and a glass of water.

“I think it’s important to start off the day on a full belly,” I said.
