“Vegas?” he questioned.

“Yes,” I said. “I’ll send the winning team to my penthouse in Vegas. What do you think, five-hundred bucks for walking around money? A thousand?”

He rolled his eyes and grabbed another beer from his armrest. “Do you ever think people want to work for you because you hand out cash like it’s candy?”

“Yes. That’s exactly why I hand it out. I have it. It keeps them happy and they bust their ass to make sure we are successful. That’s how you keep employees. That’s why my turnover is low.”

“I would say give them a hundred, but I know you’re going to give them a thousand,” he said.

“You know how fast money goes in Vegas,” I said.

“I do,” he said. “I think the last time we were there, I lost a good ten grand.”

“That’s because you suck at gambling.”

“Are you going to go with them to Vegas?” he asked.

Only if Macy’s team won.“I don’t know,” I answered casually. “I don’t usually go along on the rewards. That defeats the purpose of them getting away from the boss. I don’t want to be a drag. They should be able to have fun without worrying about the boss watching.”

“You’re brave to let them in your penthouse.”

“I trust them,” I said. “Besides, if something happens, I’ll know who to go to.”

“All of this to make your new assistant feel welcome?” he said. “Shit, what do you do for their birthdays?”

“A thousand dollars and a day off,” I replied.

“Shit. You know you would be sitting on a mountain of money if you didn’t give it all away.”

“I am sitting on a mountain of money,” I said, grinning. “That mountain was built by the good people that work for me. Without them, there would be no mountain to sit atop. I think the least I can do is reward good work.”

“If you say so,” he said. “What are office Olympics? Who can type the fastest? Who can staple the fastest?”

“I’m not sure,” I answered. “I need to review the file they sent me before. I have a person dedicated to employee satisfaction. She comes up with some pretty cool ideas. Unfortunately, she’s on maternity leave. I’m going to be stuck doing this on my own, but she already did the hard part and got it all planned.”

I was barely paying attention to the game. My mind was spinning with possibilities. If I got Macy back to Vegas, could we have a do-over? Would she even want to participate? I knew the rest of the staff would be on board. They loved these things. Macy would do it because it was part of the job, but would she want to win?

I wasn’t sure she would ever want to step foot in Vegas again. I doubted she would want to go with me, but if she was there with the team, it would be different.

“I’m out,” Dane said. “I’ll see you later.”

I locked the door behind him and cleaned up the pizza box. I tossed the empties and went to bed. I couldn’t sleep. I lay in bed thinking about her. Would she ever consider being with me? The sex was good, but that did not make a relationship. Technically, I had no business thinking about any of this. She was my assistant. I couldn’t be with her if she worked for me.

Before I fired her, I wanted to test the waters. No point in losing a good assistant if there wasn’t a chance we would be together.

Iwalked through the door in a bit of a daze. The man always left me feeling that way. Sex with him was too intense. I didn’t think it was normal. The sex today had been passionate, but I felt all the anger. He was mad at me. I was a little mad at him. It was like dousing the sexual chemistry we had with gasoline. It was explosive.

I headed for the shower, feeling the tenderness in the breast he squeezed. My hips had matching little bruises from where he’d grabbed me. It made me smile to see the evidence of his excitement. I did that to him. I made him that hungry. He had lost control. That was hot.

I showered and dressed in sweats before going into the kitchen to find something to eat. Trisha came in shortly after I had made myself a bowl of soup.

“Hey, I thought you were working late today?” I asked.

“My last meeting got canceled. And I was anxious to find out how it went. Do you still have a job?”
