“Next up is the surfing contest. The goal is stay up on your board the longest. We need five people from each team. If you’re skilled enough to take a wave, go for it, but that’s not going to be what wins it. For every second your team stays up on the board, you get a point. If you are going to ride a wave, you only get points if you land it. If you wipe out and eat sand, no points. The team with the most points wins.”

Everyone split up and headed down to the water. I had rented a few surfboards, which were all standing up and ready to use. It wasn’t actual surfing, but I couldn’t really risk someone getting hurt. This was enough to provide just enough challenge to make it fun.

The competition got started. Macy had a poster, which told me she wasn’t going to be participating. I stood on the beach and cheered everyone on. I cheered for both sides. I didn’t want to show too much favoritism.

“Next!”

That was me. I had changed into my swim trunks earlier. I pulled off my shirt and tossed it onto the sand. I looked over at Macy and didn’t miss the look in her eyes. She was surprised and was looking at me with the same hunger I had looked at her with. It was my turn to wink at her. I took the board and strolled into the water with it under my arm.

I wasn’t a pro, but I wasn’t a novice. I paddled out and got to my feet. I glanced over at the guy from the blue team. He was one of the young tech guys. I imagined both teams saved the best for last. This could get interesting.

We both saw the wave coming in at the same time. We dropped to our bellies and paddled out a little more. Then it was game on.

I felt like I was in my element. The wave rolled forward. I managed to stay upright all the way through it. I was so focused on staying up, I hadn’t noticed the other guy was already walking onto shore. He must not have managed to stay up.

My team was cheering loudly on the beach. I knew I had just won this round. I raised my fist in the air before jumping into the water. Then I made my way back to the shore and gladly high-fived everyone.

Macy was looking at me once again. “Gee, I wonder why you put surfing into the competition.”

“Are you implying I cheated?” I asked with a grin.

“No. Not at all, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how you had to win.”

She was talking shit. I liked it. “Ah, don’t be salty, gorgeous. A guy has to keep a few things up his sleeve.”

Her eyes dropped to my bare chest and then lower before she met my eyes again. “Looks like a guy might have more than just surfing skills up his sleeve.”

I grinned and patted my stomach while leaning forward. “Not like you haven’t seen what’s up my sleeves before.”

“I wasn’t aware everyone saw your sleeves,” she countered.

I looked around at the rest of the staff in various states of undress. “We all know each other,” I said, shrugging. “Are you suggesting I should put some clothes on?”

“Absolutely not,” she said. “I think this little party would be a lot less fun. You have to know you’re kind of the main attraction. Even the ladies old enough to be your mama are ogling you.”

I laughed and shook it off. “They’ve all seen it before.”

“Excuse me?” she asked with surprise and maybe, just possibly, a hint of jealousy.

“We’ve had beach days and swimming parties at my place before,” I explained. “It’s not like I’m parading around in my birthday suit. Where’s your bikini?”

“In my bedroom where it belongs,” she said.

“Ah, come on now, you can’t hide that away,” I complained.

“I don’t need to have bits falling out in front of the people I work with.”

That intrigued me. “Oh, it’s one of the little ones?”

She flashed another smile. “Maybe you’ll find out one day.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” I said.

“So, what do I get to kick your butt at next?” she asked. “I know it’s the obstacle course, but I want to see it.”

“Ihaven’t even seen it,” I said, laughing. “It’s right down there. I hired a company to set up.”

“What? You hired someone? People do that?”
