Then I very quietly made my way upstairs. Jon’s door opened just as I reached the second floor. I noticed shadows dancing behind him. The kind of shadows made from candlelight. He didn’t have to say a word. He opened the door and waited for me to go inside.

“Hi,” he whispered.

“Hello yourself.”

“I was hoping you would come,” he said and helped me undress.

“If I didn’t?”

“I would have come for you,” he replied.

We climbed into bed with both of us wearing just our underwear. He pulled the blanket over us before settling in beside me. I snuggled against him with my hand resting on his chest. His chin settled on the top of my head.

“It was a good day,” I said.

“What kind of cat?”

“Excuse me?” I asked with confusion.

“What kind of cat do you have?” he clarified. “I think I should know what’s been named after me.”

“A Siamese,” I answered.

He groaned. “No. Aren’t those kind of like the asshole of cats?”

“Yes,” I answered honestly. “Although I like my cat. He can be a demanding asshole, but he still sleeps with me most nights. And I think he loves me. It’s hard to say some days, but he does give off loving vibes when he’s not biting me.”

“Sounds like we could be related,” he joked.

“Exactly,” I teased. “He’s earned his name.”

“You mentioned you were buying a gift for your roommate,” he said. “Female?”

“Jealous?” I countered.

“Yes. Absolutely.”

“She is a female. She was with me in Vegas the first time.”

“Does she know about me?” he asked. “Us. Our whole sordid story?”

“She does,” I said.

“And?”

“And what?” I asked.

“She’s probably told you to stay far away from the crazy man, right?”

“Not entirely,” I answered honestly. “She has encouraged me not to judge until I know the whole truth.”

“I think I like her already,” he said, laughing.

“Maybe you can meet her,” I said.

“You don’t sound convinced.”

“I think the jury is still out on the matter,” I answered. “The first time, we rushed into things. I don’t know what this is, and I really don’t want to try and figure that out right now. But I don’t want to jinx it. I think I would like to see where it goes with no pressure.”
