"I would never do anything to hurt you, Kiki. Please believe me."

Her eyes are hollow when she looks at me, and it hurts more than anything that’s ever happened. "Should've believed you when you hurt me last time. I shouldn’t have let myself give you a second chance. I did this to myself."

The front door opens and in the corner of my eyes, I see My-Linh watching, her hand clasped over her mouth, and Damien, his face dark behind her.

"Kiara. Stay. Talk to me." I grab her hands but she recoils, looking at me like she doesn't even recognize who I am. "I thought... I thought you understood me. But you did the one thing I have worked so hard not to do. Rely on my family for anything. You know that and yet... you hurt me more than they ever could. At least they never lied to me.” She looks at me like it’s the last time she’s going to see me. “Goodbye, Kylian."

And then she leaves.

She really leaves.

And takes everything that makes me me with her.

Two car doors close in the distance.

"I have to go after her!" I run down the driveway, with the sound of Damien calling after me.

The car drives off before I can reach it, calling after her. I run into the middle of the street, watching the car’s headlights fade into the dark.

“Kiara!” I shout until my throat is so raw I feel like it’s bleeding.

Damien comes up to me. “She's gone, man. She's gone."

"She's not!" I push him away and run all the way down the road, but there's no trace of her left.

"She's gone, buddy." Damien says, breathless.

"She's not!" I scream, knowing in my bones that he's right. "She's... not gone. She'll be back."

I trip and fall to the ground, slamming my hand on the ground, fear, anger, and frustration condensing to stream down my face. “She’ll be back.”

He kneels down onto the ground next to me. “I hope so. I hope so, buddy."

"What did I do? What else could I have done? You heard the things that Nathan said, they were lies. They were all lies."

He doesn't say anything, but there's something unspoken in his eyes.

"Say it."

"It wasn't all lies, man. There was some truth, the conversation you had with her dad. That was real. She saw the whole thing. "

"It wasn't the whole truth. Yeah, he offered, but that’s not why I… not why I tracked her down..”

He sighs. "I know. Now you have to make her see that."

"Fuck!! I can't believe I fucked this up!! Fuck!" I scream with everything in my body. With every remnant of air and heart left in me.

"Come on, let’s go home. We can figure it out together there."

I shake my head, the feeling of helplessness crippling me. "I don’t know how."

"You'll figure it out. You're the Baxter Brain, remember?"

I feel myself dragged to my feet and two arms wrap around me.

Damien's hugging me.

Damien who hates anyone touching him who isn't My-Linh
