We look at each other for a moment, and I wonder how things will be for us from now on. Whatever it takes, however much work it needs, I’m going to do everything I can to get us back on track as best friends.
“One more thing…” he starts, and pulls a folded piece of paper out of his pocket. “This is for you.”
My shaking hand reaches out for it, but I can’t hold on, so he takes it from me, and opens it up so I can read it.
“Don’t sell to anyone but Kylian. But even better, keep it. Build something with your best friend. Make this a joint venture between Yin Tech and Baxter Enterprises. Make a legacy for your children to see what their fathers did together.”
Dennis. Sending another message from the grave. I can’t see the rest of the letter he left for Nathan. I don’t need to. This is the part about us. A piece of advice from the grave.

“I just thought you should know what he wanted, what he thought. I know it would’ve mattered to you.”
I wonder why he didn’t say anything to me. I was the one choosing to buy Yin Tech out; why hadn’t he come straight to me to tell me he thought it was a bad idea.
“He wanted me to get you to stay,” Nathan says, reading my mind. “It wouldn’t have worked any other way. I had to want you to keep this between us. And you had to know I wanted it.”
“And do you?”
He takes a long slow breath and nods.
And just like that, everything I thought I wanted wasn’t what I wanted. And everything I didn’t want was what I needed to have.
“Hey, Kylian, do you need…?” Kiara pokes her head in and turning white, seeing her brother standing here. “Nathan… what are you doing here?”
“I’m smothering him with a pillow,” Nathan jokes.
And I laugh, ignoring the pain.
Kiara joins us, gingerly. She touches my cheek and gives me a smile which fades when she sees her brother watching us.
“Kylian and I have agreed that you’re not going to do that shit in front me.”
She leans down and gives me a soft kiss. “You didn’t take the first offer, did you?”

The opening of the casino comes before we know it. Kylian has been out of hospital for a few weeks, and spent more hours in physiotherapy than I imagine is humanly possible.
I arrange for a bed to be brought down into the living room. At first I ask for another bed to be set up, but after the first night of him trying to climb into my bed with me, I agree to join him in his. As long as he doesn’t try to extend himself.
