“This better be good,” I grumble into the device.

“They are pushing through the court date. We need to act fast.”

“Call her in. It’s time to move them within the system.” I hang up, looking at the mess.

I will get my way, and I will break every single one of them in the process.

Mark. My. Words.

I’m going in circles. Everything hurts. Nothing is physically wrong with me. My head is spinning and hasn’t stopped since Nate walked out. He didn’t want to make me have to choose, but I chose him. Doesn’t he see that? How can he when you’re still with Clint?I hated how right I was. I am still with Clint. Clint’s been the only one for me for a long time now.

He told me he would always be mine because no one else would want me. I believed him. I thought that he was telling me the truth. But then Nate came in and flipped everything on its axis. How can I continue to believe what Clint said when Nate said what he had?

Because Clint’s never lied. Nate’s lying. He only needs you for something. He doesn’t want you.

I don’t want to believe that’s true, but history has shown me it is.

I look around my house, and I can’t imagine walking away from the life Clint and I have created here. I know that he loves me. He’s the only one that ever will. But, what I felt kissing Nate is nothing compared to what I feel when I kiss Clint. What does that mean? What can I do about it all? There isn’t much, given the options I have for this life. Clint’s the only one. It doesn’t matter that Nate’s lips set me on fire. It doesn’t matter that something deep inside me shattered when my body pressed against Nate’s. It was almost like the veil Clint had placed in front of me was removed.

Stop it. Stop trying to get away from Clint. You will never be happy without him. He told you so.

I walk into our room and get ready for work. Clint hasn’t been home since the day Nate was here. When I texted him, he’d told me that he ended up getting called in and had to work extra shifts—that he would be sleeping at the hospital. Simple as that.

As I’m heading to my car, I get a text from Elvira. She’s one of the few people I don’t wait until later to check the messages for.

Elvira: I got a call from Sonya. She said that she was coming over here to talk about Baby Girl and Dillon. I don’t know what’s going on, but after everything that happened, I don’t like this. Can you come over here? Something tells me I’m going to need all the help that I can get today.

Why in the world would Sonya be going over there? She has zero reasons to. She works the hospital cases. That’s where she should be. She only comes into the office when we have to compare cases and plan for court dates. I pull out my planner and see that I don’t have anything scheduled today. Going out to the farm isn’t going to be an issue.

Me: Yeah, I can be there in twenty minutes so long as the traffic isn’t shit.

Elvira: Thank you. The door is open.

Me: Shocking.

Elvira: Shush it.

I make the quick drive to the office to log that I’m working but checking on clients, and I’m at the house with a few minutes to spare. Sonya’s car isn’t here yet, which has me thankful that I got here before she did.

Walking into the house, I find Elvira in the kitchen with Baby Girl and Dillon at the table. Baby Girl has a tray full of fruit, while Dillon has pancakes and eggs. I walk up to him and give him a quick hug. He doesn’t waste time hugging me back. I kiss the top of his head as I rub Baby Girl’s head and smile at her. When I sit down across from Dillon, he gives me a smile full of pancakes. Hishi Audrinacomes out more asi ah-e-nah,and I can’t help but laugh at him. His mouth is so stuffed it can’t even close all the way.

“Hey, there, little chipmunk. How about you chew your food first and then say hi, okay?” I give him a smile, and he nods his head.“How’s the morning been, El?”

She turns from the stove with two plates and walks to the table. I gave up a long time ago trying to tell this woman that I didn’t need to eat every time I came over. She never listened, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that she would cook and feed those around her when stressed.

Placing the plates down, she gives me a smile that doesn’t wholly reach her eyes before turning back around. She has two steaming cups of coffee when she returns, and I take mine gratefully.

“If you don’t count the phone call I got this morning, it’s been great. Who the he—eello calls before 8 a.m. to tell someone they’re on their way?”

“Honestly, it doesn’t make much sense to me why she would call that early. However, if there were a negative reason for her coming, she wouldn’t call. Protocol states that we don’t let the foster know, so they can’t prepare and hide things. That’s the only thing telling me that this should be okay. But with that said, she shouldn’t be coming here to begin with.”

“What do you mean?”

“Sonya works the hospital cases. The two that this is in regards to didn’t come from the hospital. They didn’t have to be placed right after birth. It would be my or Ellie’s job if anything needed to be checked up on…. Well, if she was working.” I give a bright smile thinking about Ellie and her three babies. I couldn’t believe it when we found out that she was having triplets. The poor woman and I say this with love, was gigantic. But if anyone could handle being pregnant with three babies at a time, it was Ellie.

“She is supposed to swing by sometime this week, but with everything that happened, I told her that I would come to her.I’m just waiting for Ken to finish everything he has to do today on the ranch.Although, I don’t know if today will end up working depending on how this visit goes.”

“Hey, Momma El. Did you know that Poppa Ken said I can feed the chickensandthe horses today?” Dillon shouts out. The joy in his voice is evident. He doesn’t know what happened to his mother. Which, that in its own, was shocking as hell. I hated the woman, but she didn’t deserve to be murdered. As El talks about feeding the animals, I think back to the call I got, letting me know what happened.
