‘It’s not a problem or anything,’ Hannah said breezily. ‘She likes you, I think.’ She looked up at him questioningly, her insides writhing with a hundred different emotions.

Rob held her gaze. ‘It doesn’t matter if she does like me,’ he said gently. ‘I’m not interested, and besides, hotel guests are off limits. I’d lose my job.’

‘Oh,’ said Hannah, her eyes widening as she processed this new and unexpected information. ‘Right.’

‘See, only ten minutes late,’ sang Gaynor, hurrying onto the court with the others. Hannah noted that it was actually nearer twenty, but didn’t say anything.

‘Good work,’ said Rob, checking his watch. ‘How is everyone feeling today?’

‘Not too bad,’ said Jess, who actually looked quite sprightly. Gaynor gave him a dazzling grin, clearly her game face, but Trish looked like reheated death. Her skin was pallid and blotchy, and her usually glossy hair was shoved into a bun that looked like a bird’s nest.

‘Broken,’ said Trish. ‘But I only have myself to blame.’

‘Well, we’re all here, which is the main thing,’ said Rob. ‘Let’s get warmed up, shall we?’

Hannah tried to shake off all the confusing thoughts about Rob’s rules, and what that signified about whether he did or didn’t like her. She’d process that all later, but right now she needed to get her head back in the game.

‘Where are we going tonight?’ asked Gaynor over lunch.

‘I don’t have any major plans yet,’ said Jess. ‘I thought we might want to play it a bit lower key after two big nights out.’

‘Bollocks to that,’ said Trish, glancing over at Rob and the other coaches. ‘It might be years before I get anywhere close to a guy who looks like that. I need to keep up my blowjob practice before I forget how to do it.’

‘I can’t do blowjobs,’ said Gaynor. ‘They’re not vegan.’

‘I’m sorry, what the fuck?’ exclaimed Jess.

‘Hang on, is that an actual vegan rule?’ asked Trish.

‘Hi,’ said Rob, appearing directly behind Hannah’s chair. She resisted the temptation to turn her head, and instead stared intently at her empty lunch plate, wishing her hair wasn’t stuck to her sweaty neck.

‘Hey, Rob,’ said Trish, giving him her most winning smile. ‘We were just discussing whether blowjobs are vegan.’

‘No, we weren’t,’ said Gaynor, giving her a glare.

‘I just think we should get a third party view,’ said Trish. ‘Rob, what do you think?’

‘Wow, OK,’ said Rob, his torso so close to Hannah she could practically feel the heat coming off it. ‘Depends how much of a purist you are, I guess. Which one of you is vegan?’

‘Gaynor,’ said Trish quickly. ‘I’ll literally eat anything.’

‘I think you’ve made that abundantly clear,’ muttered Gaynor.

‘Right,’ said Rob. ‘Well, I’m no expert. Maybe to be safe you should only blow other vegans?’

‘I’ll pass that suggestion on to my husband,’ said Gaynor with a smirk. ‘He’s partial to a bacon sandwich, so I’m not entirely sure how he’ll feel about it.’

‘ANYWAY,’ said Trish. ‘That probably wasn’t why you came over.’ She looked at him expectantly, and for a moment Hannah wondered if what he said earlier about hotel guests being off limits was true. If it was, Trish clearly either didn’t know or didn’t care.

‘Oh, yeah,’ said Rob. ‘I’ve been sent over by my fellow coaches to ask if you fancy joining us for a trip to Marbella this evening.’ He sounded a little strained, and Hannah wondered if they’d twisted his arm. Trish, meanwhile, had lit up like a Christmas tree.

‘Oh yeah, definitely,’ she said, before remembering that there were three other women in her party and it wasn’t just her decision. ‘What do you guys think?’

‘Fine by me,’ said Gaynor. ‘Although not that bar we were in on Saturday night; there was a guy in there who was a right creep.’

‘Bar Solo,’ said Rob. ‘I’ll make sure it’s not on the list.’

‘How did you know that?’ asked Jess, eyeing him curiously.
