“I’m sure they’re fine. Why don’t I take you on a tour? I’m sure you’d love to see the property.”

“But…”. He puts a finger over my lips and stops my protest cold.

“They will be fine. Let them take care of things.”

“Petal needs help. I don’t know if she realizes how much trouble she’s in.”

He nods his dark head at me and there’s fire in his blue eyes again. “Trust me. I will not let anything happen to you or your friend. Neither will anyone that works for me. Do you trust me?”

“I do. Strangely, even though I know you’re not a good man, I do trust you.”

He sighs and his thumb caresses my hand, his eyes following the small movement which makes my belly flop like I’m riding a rollercoaster.

“I may not be a classically good man, dove, but I will always be good to you. And the family that we eventually have. You will never have to worry about me taking care of you and our children.”

“You keep jumping ahead,” I huff. “We just met. You shouldn’t be saying things like that.”

“I will say them out loud until you finally believe them, dove. You’re mine. I’m yours. We are forever.”

My eyes drift around the room, still stunned by all the opulence around us. And I’ve only seen two rooms. “I’m not sure that I’m made for a place like this.”

He shakes his head and his eyes lift, his full mouth tilted up at the side. “You were made to be spoiled and taken care of in the lap of luxury, dove. I cannot wait to marry you and spoil you like the queen you are.”

I roll my eyes and he throws his head back to laugh, tugging me to my feet. “Come on, my queen. Let me show you your new kingdom and all of the family that will keep you safe and happy for the rest of our lives.”

“That’s not their job. It’s mine to keep me happy. Or yours maybe, if we do end up together.”

His blue eyes dance. “I love the way that you think there’s an if for you, dove. There is no if. There is only when.”

I huff at him. “You’re like a dog with a bone.”

“A very beautiful, sexy as hell bone.”

I laugh lightly. “That does not sound right.”

“Maybe not. But it’s the truth. I will always tell you the truth, dove. No matter what or why.”

“Alright. Why were those cops asking all about our jobs and where we lived instead of what we saw?”

He groans and I nod. “I want an answer. A real answer, Xavier.”

He pulls me to my feet. “Walk with me, dove.”

“You didn’t answer my question.” I let him tuck my hand in his crooked arm and lead me out of the room and down the hall back to the front door. The older man is standing there and he lets us out and then follows behind us, closing the door.

I glance back at him but he’s not even looking at us. His eyes are focused all around us and his hand is inside his jacket where there’s a strange lump that I swear has to be a gun.

He urges me to look at him again. He sighs. “Those men might have been on Vitrillo’s payroll. And very likely they’ve already given them that information.”

My face pales. “So they can take care of us.”

He stops moving and lifts his big hands to place them gently on my cheeks. “Hey. Hey, look at me. I swear to you, they will not even get close to you or your friend.”

“Petal. Her name is Petal,” I whisper.

“I know who she is. But she’s your friend and that makes her irreplaceable to me and my family. Nothing will happen to either one of you.”

I open my mouth to protest but he just glares stonily at me. “It. Will. Not. I will kill anyone who tries. As painfully, angrily as I can.”
