He says it so simply, and yet, the genuineness makes my heart ache. Knowing the reason behind his loyalty somehow only intensifies that feeling, and without thinking about it, I slip my hand into Efrem’s strong, calloused one.
Everything about the man is big and strong and unyielding, and yet, beneath his hard exterior, I find Efrem to be so much more. He’s perhaps the single sexiest man I’ve ever met. And as his fingers closer around my hand, my stomach does a giddy somersault.
We walk for a moment in silence.
Then Efrem pauses, his grip firm but gentle as he tugs me toward him, turning me to face him at the same time.
His free hand finds my waist, steadying me even as he turns my knees to Jell-O.
“You are okay that I work for Pyotr Veles? I know he and his wife are your friends, and I do not want to compromise that,” he says, his expression adamant though his low voice rises slightly above a murmur. “But I must know now. Before this goes further.”
I barely register his question at first, not with his final statement ringing in my ears. And his proximity does things to my body that wipes my mind of all complex thought. Suddenly, all I can think about is how close his lips are to mine. If I stood on my toes, I could almost reach them, feel their warmth against my lips.
My breath catches, and I’m aware that Efrem asked something he expects me to answer. I know it from the intent look he gives me. I nod. He studies my face closely and seems to find what he’s looking for in my expression—as if to confirm my answer.
Then his eyes drop to my lips.
Electricity crackles between us, and my heart stops as time seems to stand still.
Suddenly, my skin feels feverish. The heat in my belly roars to life.
Christ, I’ve never wanted someone to kiss me so badly.
As if hearing my thoughts, Efrem leans in.
The hand at my waist travels to the small of my back as he pulls me close.
And our lips meet in an explosion of invisible sparks.

I don’t care that we’re in the middle of a public place. I don’t care that this is our first date. I don’t even care that Efrem’s eight years older than me and directly linked to a family my parents have explicitly told me to stay away from. All I want right now is more of him.

“I have wanted to kiss you for so long,” Efrem rasps, his voice strained with desire.
My heart flutters at the confession that so closely matches my own. “How long?” I breathe.
“Longer than I care to say.”
And then he consumes me once more.
Slowly, Efrem walks me back toward the railing of the riverside path, his hands more boldly exploring my body. I let mine run up his rock-hard chest so I can twine my arms around the back of his neck.
