Movement to my left caught my eye as a man appeared from the shadows, gun raised to shoot. I shot him in the throat before he could get off a shot, catching his body as it fell so it didn’t make noise.

Disarming his body, I tucked his gun into my waistband before heading to the side door. We could hear voices inside, the men clearly knowing something was wrong as they scrambled to bring back power.

I pushed open the door, dropping to my knees to shoot the two men who were inside. Shouting could be heard in the distance followed by gunfire.

They knew we were here.

“If you keep going forward one hundred meters, there is a staircase to your left. That’s where you want to go.” Kenji said as I followed his directions.

Hurrying down the stairs, we were met with a solid metal door that had a complex security system. We had agreed before we left to hook up body cams to the team leaders so Kenji could see everything from his end.

“Are you seeing this? It looks like it is still engaged.” I said, hearing Kenji hum.

“Yeah. I am working my way around it now. It is on an emergency system. My guess is it is a panic room of some sort and most likely where you will find Rocco and Nicolo.” I could hear the soft tapping of his keyboard through the earpiece as the red light switched to green, signaling it was open.

I cautiously pushed open the door, pausing for a moment when I saw the other side.

“This isn’t a panic room.” I muttered as I looked at the cells. Four Jail cells lined the room before leading into what looked like an interrogation room, if you wanted to call it that. It was more like something from a medieval horror story, and it smelt just as bad.

“Fuck. There is definitely another room at the back though and looks like a camera is functioning on a closed circuit to monitor whatever is in there.” Kenji said softly.

My gut feeling started to scream at me that something wasn’t right here as I pushed open the door to another room. In the center of the room a man was tied to a chair, the glow of a light shining directly on him.

He was so badly beaten it took me a minute to figure out who I was looking at until he looked directly at me.

“Nicolo.” I whispered staring in horror at the man. I hurried over to him, releasing the restraints that held him in place.

“Well, I guess that explains why no one has seen him in so long.” Kenji muttered as Nicolo collapsed forward, one of the men catching him.

“Get him out. Don’t stop until you are off the compound.” I instructed as another man came to help, supporting Nicolo’s weight.

I looked up at the camera that was facing the chair, noticing that it moved.

‘Kenji. Someone is watching through the camera.” The hair on my neck stood on end as I realized someone, probably Rocco was on the other end somewhere, watching everything happen. Like he knew.

“I can’t access it. The system is heavily guarded, like government-level security. It will take me more time than we have to get in. I can see that it isn’t on site. Someone is remote accessing it.” He said and I could hear the frustration in his voice.

“Where is Luca? You need to call them all back. We have what we came for.” I headed out of the room, feeling like this had been a setup somehow. But that would mean we had someone in our ranks that was feeding information to Rocco.

“He is upstairs near the office. I’ve already given the order to fall back.” I hurried up the stairs, looking for signs of Luca’s team.

One of Rocco’s men stepped in front of me, gun aimed at my head, and I managed to knock it aside, the shot echoing through the room as it hit the wall behind me. I punched him in the face before he leaped at me, a feral beast swinging his arms and legs.

Another shot, muffled by the silencer sounded behind him and I felt the wetness of blood on my face as the man slumped. I dropped him to see Luca standing there, his cocky grin flashing in the darkness.

“You’re welcome.” He said and I sighed as the lights flashed on, illuminating the mess.

“Just a little redecorating hey?” Luca said before pushing open the door in front of him.

“Where are you going?” I said, following him.

“I want to check something in the office. My gut tells me that there is something more to be found here. I heard about Nicolo. This whole thing feels off.” He shrugged as he made his way toward the desk.

“You go. I’ll be right behind you. I don’t think there are many men left here anyway. It was surprisingly understaffed, don’t you think?” He said and I had to agree with him.

“Two minutes. If I don’t see you exit the building in two minutes, I am coming back to drag your ass out.” I snarled as he saluted me.

I hurried out of the building, feeling like we had just been given this win. Rocco wanted us to find Nicolo. That much was clear already. He had also used Nicolo for his own means, to take the power of the Moretti seat. That explained why things were desperate for him, and why he had increased his determination to remove Aurora.
