“Ordinarily our policy is to wipe the board clean of all involved but it would seem that the Bratva have a soft spot for you, Ms. Moretti. Someone is looking out for you and has decided to let you live. That means I am here with the clean-up crew to remove the other side.” She gestured to a tall Russian man standing by the window.

He was muscled, thick, and intimidating with his entire body covered in tattoos. His eyes gleamed with a psychotic joy that made Dante and Alfie look sane.

“This is Anatoly. He will be taking over the logistics of this mission and you will all be answering to him.” She pointed to another man who sat next to Declan.

He grinned, his thick forearms resting on the table, and I noticed the tattoo of a flaming skull.

“That is Mikhail. He will be taking over the technical side of things. I will be the liaison between what is happening here, and the rest of the Bratva. I am their eyes, ears, and mouth while we are here.” She pushed the small glasses up the bridge of her nose.

“We have it on good authority that Rocco is on his way to see the Moretti Thorn. The plan is to intercept them both once we have the location of where the Thorn is currently located.” She glanced at Benjamin and the tension in him had me wondering what conversations he had with her before we arrived.

“Rocco is not to be killed. He belongs to us. We will be taking him in for questioning.” I froze, anger rising.

“With all due respect, I don’t want to rest until he is dead. He has taken everything from me, I deserve to have his head.” Katerina smiled at me. A predatory smile that revealed just how crazy she was beneath her cool exterior.

“You can rest assured that he will not remain alive for long. Only long enough for him to answer our questions. We are aware that he has been working with the company known as Redvue.” Benjamin shifted in his seat.

“About that. Are you planning on sharing what you know about this company and why Rocco has files from all of us?” Benjamin asked.

“No. We are taking care of it.” Katerina said as Mikhail chuckled. I watched as all the men struggled not to argue back.

“We are just waiting for the traces to be complete. Then we will formulate a plan. I have to make a phone call.” She stood abruptly, leaving the room with Anatoly following behind her.

I stared at the room, glad to know I wasn’t the only one suffering the mental whiplash that she left in her wake, Kenji and Caleb came in quietly a moment later.

Kenji hugged me tightly and I noticed the tightness in his eyes.

“This isn’t your fault, Kenji.” I whispered, knowing he felt the responsibility of keeping everyone safe.

“I think we found something.” Declan said and we all turned to him and a grinning Mikhail.

Chapter thirty-one

Kenji

Icouldn’tshakethefeeling that Luca’s disappearance was my fault. If I had been paying more attention to his body cam instead of seeing if I could hack into the remote camera in that room, I would have seen something was wrong and I could have called Kingston back to save him.

“It looks like the last place we saw Luca’s car was a little outside of the city, heading towards a seemingly abandoned farm.” Declan said as Mikhail typed away on his own computer.

“The building is registered under a dummy business, but the deeper you go, we eventually find that all trails lead back to Redvue. This is our place.” Mikhail said, his accent heavy.

“We need a plan going in.” Kingston said as the others nodded.

“You will follow Anatoly’s plan, yes? He will have the best plan. He used to be in the Special Forces. Expert in extractions.” Mikhail said with a nod, leaving us all staring at him, unsure what to say.

As if saying his name summoned the man, he walked through the door, taking a long sweep of the room before pausing on me.

“You will work with Declan and Mikhail and take care of communication. Listen to Mikhail. He will teach you tricks you only dream about.” He said, his accent was subtle which was surprising in comparison to Mikhail and Katerina.

“I don’t care what any of you say, I am going this time.” Aurora said with a bite, glaring at Anatoly. The man grinned and took two steps towards her, towering over her in an intimidating way.

I reached out to touch her shoulder as Kingston moved to her side.

“Good. You must stand up. If you wish to be the head of a family, you cannot hide behind your people any longer. This is your final test. If you are not present at Rocco’s downfall, the others will not follow you and you will continue to deal with uprises against your power.” Anatoly looked at her up and down as if appraising her.

“I don’t like it. She could get hurt.” Kingston said and Anatoly raised an eyebrow at him.

“You were once in the army, you of all people should understand that there are times when the leader must be the first off, the line. She will never be safe if they do not fear and respect her.” He turned away, dismissing the conversation as he began ordering the others around.
