“Okay then. What say we bake another batch of milk cookies? And I’ll even let you bake some for Daddy if you’re good.”

“Really?”

“Yup.”

“Yay!” they squealed.

“Girls, think you could go hang out briefly in your playroom? I need to have a quick discussion with Zoey.”

Rose grabbed her sister’s hand, and together they walked out of the room.

“They’re adorable,” I remarked.

“Don’t be deceived. They are a handful, especially Rose,” he said fondly. He loved his girls, that much I could tell. “They look alike but can’t be any more different, as you may have observed. Rose is more open, carefree, and bubbly, and you really don’t need to do much with her. Just be prepared to answer a million questions and receive even more hugs.”

“Okay. I think I can handle that.”

“Oh, I’m sure you can and will. The tricky part is Aurora. She’s wary around people. Rarely speaks, doesn’t do well with strangers, and has a lot of allergies, including some cleaning agents. I made a list. Please come with me.”

I followed him through the large marble house into an office of some sort. The room looked like a compact library with several tall shelves stacked to capacity with books lining the walls. In the middle of the room sat a huge desk and an office chair.

He took a seat behind the desk and offered me the seat opposite him.

“Here’s a list of things she’s allergic to. I’d suggest you keep them away from their diets altogether, as both girls have been known to share virtually everything. Also, she needs to be eased into things.”

“I understand.”

“I will need you to be here 8 am daily till around 5 pm when I get back from work, except I inform you otherwise. There will be days when I might need you to work extra hours, which I’ll, of course, add to your pay, and I’ll always give you a heads-up except when it can’t be helped.”

I nodded as I skimmed through the list.

Peanut, almond, cinnamon... The list went on and on.

“I am still in the process of hiring a cook, so for now, you may need to order take-outs. There are cards in—-”

“I could cook,” I cut in. “I love cooking, and honestly, I think it’s part of my job. At least for the girls, cooking and cleaning.”

He gave me a quizzical look. “Are you sure?”

“Very. It’s no hassle. I promise to take care of everything that concerns them.”

“Do you have any concerns or questions?”

I hesitated and clutched my bag tightly. “I have a son. I have to pick him up from school at 3 pm on school days,” I said, dropping my eyes to the smooth surface of the table.

“It’s fine. You can take the girls with you to pick him up. Jason, right?”

I let out a gasp before I could stop myself. “Yes.”

“How old is he?” he looked concerned.

“Seven.”

“That’s nice. The girls could use a big brother.”

My heart gave a lurch, and I felt it again, that stab of guilt. But I didn’t have time to dwell on it as he pulled out a drawer and brought out a file.

“Now that that is out of the way let’s talk about your payment. I already had my lawyer draw a contract. All you need to do is go through it and append your signature if it works for you.”
